Serendipity often comes into play, you read a review here, you make a booking there,,same old same old.
See the sign on the scaffold above ( the 200 year old building is getting a touch up,for her birthday) push the brass bell, click goes the electric lock, up the stairs to the first floor, push the brass bell, click goes the electric lock and you enter the main room, on the first floor of a once Aristocratic Residence.
Domenico is there to greet you.
Out the door you came in, onto the landing and room number three is on your left, through the massive doors and you are in another cavernous room. A long narrow ensuite at the edge of this room, down along narrow corridor you enter your grand bedroom ( 50 or 60 m2) complete with original ceiling.
So far so good, it's a bit dark and the layout is a bit strange, but what an adventure.
When we go back into the main room to retireve our passports, there was mention of a tour (yes that what I thought, too) so, on spec, we said we would go - if you go to this hotel - don't even think twice - for €50 four of six people get a personal guided tour by Marco (the owner of the hotel) driven, in true Catanian fashion around the old town, up to mount Etna for a walk in the snow, back to the fish market, underground through ancient lava flow to the river as it was from Roman times and much much more. I think Marco actually spoke there launguages at the same time, on occasions - don't even think twice!
    SO PROS-
    200 year old historical building
Only up one level ( maybe two if you get the higher rooms)
Domenico is the most genuinely friendly souls I have encountered
Marco is a most enigmatic proprietor , high speed, went to the university around the corner, knows about lava
    CONS-
Our room faced Via Etnea and ear plugs were required for me to sleep on one night ( not a real drama as I travel everywhere with them) wine satisfied the other night
    Modest breakfast
    OVERALL - serendipitous
