This Church is another great proof of Ravenna's ancient greatness. Even if located outside from other city centre attractions, it's worth a visit. I don't understand why this church has a different ticket (5 euros) from other churches and it's not included in the package.

Come suggerito dal nome, la Basilica non si trova nel comune di Ravenna, ma di Classe (poco distante). La Basilica è a tre navate, con un campanile del IX secolo. La struttura (devo confessare, una delle poche di Ravenna) è di accesso gratuito le prime domeniche di ogni mese, il che è senz'altro positivo. I mosaici sono stupendi. Merita una visita.

Though it can seem like a hike to get here, is worth it even after seeing Ravenna's many mosaics. The church itself also is noteworthy: compared to its counterparts be city, it's huge!

This has to be the most implausible location for the "best preserved byzantine church in western europe". Drive past the strip of shops and supermarkets on the outskirts of ravenna and then out into the agricultural fields and fairly low cost new houses. Be very thankful for Google maps as it navigates you around the tenth roundabout. And then you see most implausibly an old church coming into view on the edge of a field. This remoteness presumably explains the extraordinary state of repair of the church. Apparently everything is as it would have been around 1300 years ago, in an almost perfect state of repair. The mosaics are of course lovely (though not our favourite of the trip) , as is the calm elegance of the church. but what really struck us was the series of sarcophagi of all the early ravenna bishops. The early ones are incredible works of art. By the 700s they have regressed enormously: the dark ages illustrated.
