Laugafell

  We tried to get to Laugafell from Aukreyri (May 6, 2018). We took F821 about as far as we could from the town (maybe 30kms?) but came across an “impassable” sign posting approx 15 kilometres away from the destination. Inquiring with a local, we were told the destination was closed and only open June/July and also that the route we were trying to take wasn’t possible. Perhaps there’s another way? We followed the google maps suggest. Wish we could’ve made it there!

  The pool on the surface of the moon. My father and I were driving from Akureyri to the southern coast through the interior in September. We were winging it, sleeping in the Duster, hadn't bathed in a couple of days. Then we came upon this place. No one was there, the buildings all locked up. We bathed and relaxed. It was sunny, 3°. I'll never forget the blowing wind, the glaciers and mountains on the horizon, the little bit of green around us and nothing but volcanic wastes all beyond that.

  By far the best highland experience. Beautiful pool and - for its remote location - great facilities. Very clean and well maintained by a lovely and helpful young family! Head up and enjoy!

  We found this place by accident, traveling a 4x4 camper across the highlands. The camping doesn't have electricity nor showers, but there is a very nice hot pool and the views are stunning. Quiet and not very crowdy as it's hard to find the place even if you have a proper vehicle to reach it.

  Laugafell is one of the most enjoyable places to visit in the Icelandic Highaland. The geothermal pool is near the top of my list over geothermal pools in Iceland. The facility is great. The camping area is one of the best in the Icelandic Highland.
