Great photo op. There's an eerie beauty to lava. Don't miss the crater Viti--pale blue water inside. If you have time, walk around. Was a really good visit.

Parking available right next to crater. Drive off route 1 for about 10 minutes through power plant. Cool place.

The road was closed at the base of Krafla. Had to hike up a good 20 minutes. The crater itself was covered in snow.

We had a hard time finding Krafla. We saw a sign that said "Krafla" so we assumed we were there. It was a geothermal lava field, which was interesting, and we did walk around for a few minutes. To find the crater lake, we drove past this area. Double check your directions and map before you leave.
The lake was pretty with beautiful blue water, and the trail led to an interesting geothermal area. There was a smaller lake along the trail. The one downside was that it was very very very muddy the day we went. I suspect it may always be like that. Make sure you have some sort of bag to put your shoes in once you are done walking becasue it will get your car filthy.

I was here at winter time. It is not very easy drive up to the crater so do not take risk and do not be that guy who ends driving in the side of the road. After you will need to call emergency service. After the power station better take 30 min walk and it is worth of that. Crater is amazing still it was frozen when I was there. View from top point is very nice.

Interesting place, but masive steam from power plant behind Krafla gets more attention from most tourists.

Super blue water inside a large crater. About a 10 min drive from the ring road. Very easy to spot has a big Krafla sign at the main road. The crater lies at the end. Very close to the parking lot makes it a quick stop. Have to pass by the geothermal power plant which smells heavily of sulphur, which you'll probably be used to by now. Worth stopping at if you're in the area.

Crater. Not really that interesting as on pictures but still very nice. The mud here is terrible, you'll be cleaning your shoes for some time

The brilliant blue color of the water stands out very well against the bleak background. The overall experience doesn't quite compare to some of the other sights in Iceland, but it's worth the trip if you're in the area.

Very cool little lake to check out. Can easily walk around it. Parking lot is next to lake. It'll take you 10 minutes to an hour depending on how much you explore.

Worth a visit - only a short drive on paved roads. You can walk around the entire caldera (and see one or two much smaller lakes on the way) or just take in the view from near the parking lot. When walking around the caldera, there is a point at which you feel like you are on another planet due to the space age looking power plant buildings!
