Deb Medhekar represents the next wave of directors. It was under the tutelage of Ram Madhvani that the ethos of Equinox, of what it represents in the industry, was passed on to him - first hand. Ironically his hairdo (or the lack of it) points us back to its origins at the anti-everything institute in Pune (FTII) where Deb acquired his characteristic hands-on, quirky, graphic-aesthetic which allows him to deal with heavy visual effects while retaining a certain folksy-rooted twist.
It was in his second year at FTII that a spec spot he did for a Beer company in Germany for the Munich International Students film Festival won him the first ever Konig Ludwig Trophy (Worth 10,000 Euro), which paid for the rest of his projects at the institute including his diploma film, Swayambhu Sen Foresees his End.
This short film, which is an urban legend of an extraordinary film student who stole everything he needed to make a film, is part of this year’s selection of Indian Panorama at International Film Festival of India besides having been screened at 6 International festivals including an Honorary Mention at the Columbus International Film & Video Festival (CHRIS Awards). Screenings include St. Louis Film Festival and The Sydney Underground Film Festival.
But the call of the ad world which had made itself first heard after the Konig Ludwig Trophy had to be answered. Gosh this advertising thing is insatiable once you've tasted it's blood. Along with all these ads he still continues to direct music videos & writing screenplays for feature films & soon getting ready to direct his own feature film.
To conclude – a quote from the infamous Swayambhu Sen, “All my life I live like I’m underwater it’s only when I’m making a film does it feel like I have come up to breathe.”
