Ottobock India is a 100% owned subsidiary of Otto Bock HealthCare GmbH, the only multinational rehabilitation company directly investing in India and contributing to improving the lives of people with physical disabilities.
I am an Instrumentation Engineer. The dreadful accident happened four years back. Both my hands had to be amputated in order to save my life.
Early days after amputation were a huge struggle. I hated it to be fed or bathed by someone else, even not being able to drink a glass of water myself. I was irritable and easily picked up fights with family members. Why me? What did I do wrong? Am I going to be like this forever? Will I be able to go back to my job? Questions like thes...e troubled me.
One day I said to myself: “Stop feeling helpless. This is your New Normal!” and started planning for future. First – prosthetic hands. Second – learn to do my own tasks myself. Next – start a new profession. One by one, I ticked them all. Today, I take private tuitions.Whenever possible, I share my journey with people. And yes- Nidhi – the apple of my eyes is reason enough for me to be independent! 😊
I don’t want people to call me a Hero. I want everyone to understand that self-pitying after disability is the excuse for not working hard to earn respect. Instead, show off your mettle. Find technology and techniques that will help you. Share your story. You will be surprised to find that there are already many people who have found solutions to problems like yours!

See MoreWe work as Prosthetic and Orthotic Technicians with Ottobock’s Mumbai clinic.
Both of us started as office support staff when Ottobock opened its first clinic in Mumbai in 1998. We used to watch over the shoulders of prosthetists making sockets, shaping foam cosmeses, assembling myoelectric hands. We showed interest in doing the fabrication work and started as Technicians to support fabrication of ottobock devices. So now, we are ‘behind the scene people’ who build Ottobock devices for many users.
Now many young Prosthetists call us “Sir”!! (Laugh loudly..)

See More“My name is Captain Satendra Sangwan.
In June 1999, I was posted in Drass at Kargil Sector of Jammu & Kashmir leading our Commando Platoon.
On June 29, we were clearing the enemy bunkers in the Black Rock and Three Pimple area. It was a dark, cold night and I landed on an anti-personnel landmine. There was a big blast and very soon I realised that I have only one leg remaining!
...Though it was a big loss but at that point of time, we could bear as a sacrifice for the service of our motherland.
After a couple of months, I got my prosthesis, and life again began to rock.
Courtesy Team Ottobock I never looked back and picked up sports like athletics and badminton. I represented at various National and International championship to reach at the level of winning the Asian Games and IWAS World Games in Badminton.
My latest achievement? Well – I became the first amputee to lead the first independent corporate team up to the Mt. Everest in May 2017.
What is important is – I kept adding new skills – walking, running, playing badminton, javelin throwing - Thankfully, Ottobock was there to support my changing requirements. Sockets, repairs to the feet that I would break, ideas to acquire new skills… I am glad to have Ottobock on my team.”
