Livnot U'Lehibanot, meaning to build and to be built, is a nonprofit organization (founded in 1980) that seeks to strengthen and preserve Jewish Heritage - through people and places. They run programs in the summer and winter for people between 20-30yrs. On the programs, participants connect with their Jewish identity and heritage through classes, nature hikes and service work (eg. community service, excavation of a National Heritage site on Livnot U'Lehibanot property, living in the Old City of Tzfat). They also rebuild the Old City and have tackled a number of restoration and preservation projects for over 30 years. They currently offer tours of two projects: tunnels under Livnot U'Lehibanot and a 16th century community center currently being renovated. Livnot also serves as the official Visitors Center of Tzfat (Safed, Zefat).

Livnot is the only year round program I know of that offers such an open and safe environment for nurturing self exploration from a Jewish perspective. In a time when the pressures of labels have never been stronger, we can sometimes be forced into a box. How do we break free? By going back to our roots, our stories, our traditions. To know where you're going, you need to know where you're coming from. Livnot means to build yourself and others.

It's a great idea while in the visitors center to ask about their tours.
