Rathcroghan is a complex of archaeological sites near Tulsk in County Roscommon, Ireland. Rathcroghan is one of the six Royal Sites of Ireland. This landscape which extends over six square kilometres, consists of 240 plus archaeological sites, sixty of which are protected national monuments, It is also the location for the beginning and end of a national epic tale – an Táin Bó Cuailnge, and the royal seat of Medb (Maeve), Connacht's Warrior Queen. I had the pleasure of going here last week , I love this place and I can't wait to go back again, the feeling when your there is very different I think , it's like you can feel the history not only see it I went down into the cave of the cats , and I must say the experience I had was unforgettable Rathcroghan possesses an entrance to the Otherworld, described in the medieval period as "Ireland's Gate to Hell", located at Oweynagat (the Cave of the Cats). The cave has associations with the pagan festival of Samhain, Halloween, as well as being described as the "fit abode" of Morrigan, a Celtic Goddess of pre-Christian Ireland. and believe me if you go down the cave you just might have company :) please enjoy my photos .

The Cruachan Ai Heritage Centre is a gem. It is similar in size and scope to many heritage centres that you find dotted around Ireland, so you're probably wondering 'what sets it apart and makes it special'? The centre itself is very nicely laid out with well thought out panels and mannequins. Like all good museums and heritage centres the display is only half the story though. Talk to the staff and see the history come alive. The greatest strength of this centre is the people that work here. From the folk who work in the restaurant to the tour guides, the welcome, enthusiasm and knowledge freely shared is a credit to the centre. The optional trip to the Royal Site and cave is a must. Daniel, the tour guide makes the past come alive with his evocative descriptions of feasting, combat and Iron Age life. I can't recommend this centre enough. A final piece of advice the tour of the Royal Site takes place outdoors bring warm clothes and sturdy footwear if visiting in Winter. The optional descent into the cave can be a little muddy so old clothes might be a good idea. I hope you enjoy this centre and tour as much as I did.

Whether you want to learn more about Irelands heritage or are looking for an interesting place to visit whilst in the area, or just want to make a 'pit stop' for a cup of tea / coffee or bite to eat (they have a great little cafe that offers great value) Rathcroghan Heritage Centre is well worth putting on your list of places to go. You can be sure of a very warm welcome.
Rathcroghan centre in Tulsk is an amazing place with knowledgeable and friendly staff always willing to give their time and help. The exhibition centre is really well designed and there are guided tours / walks most days. The gift shop is full of a wide range of interesting items including lots of handcrafted artisan work and at prices to suit all pockets. There is also a great selection of books on many relevant topics.
We recommend Rathcroghan to all of our guests and none have ever had anything but praise after they have been there.response / report this review -

This visitor experience is certainly not one to be missed in North roscommon. There is a wealth of knowledge from all the staff about history and archeology of the area. The cafe caters for all, including healthy options and serves a delicious breakfast too. A great day out for young and old..One not to be missed.

An excellent introduction to the important archaeological sites in the area. Superb staff and very good interpretation. You can visit the sites themselves subsequently with an informed mind and a great booklet available to purchase. Highly recommended!

This was in interesting little site, but a little lacking. The audio-visual presentation had some nice story-telling, but the museum is not very coherent, there isn't much in terms of actual neolithic remains on the site, and they don't really provide you with the tools tour tour the sites in the surrounding countryside. Over-all it was a little disappointing.
