The staff are very helpful and enthusiastic. The garden was nice to walk around and gave me loads of ideas for my own veg patch. Found it very interesting to learn about the rare black bees that have made the home at the castle. I will come back again as they're restoring more of the house.

Well worth a visit. We arrived on a free OPW day and were delighted with the information given to us by Heike..she knows her history and was lovely

Smashing spot. Ongoing renovations are slowly but surely bringing this magnificent house back to life. However it's the kitchen garden which really make this a wonderful expereince. As ever OPW staff are great. Well worth the 5 euro entrance fee

This is more an estate house than castle but has lots of history to it and is well worth a visit, the lawns are well looked after, there is a huge garden with work in progress. The house itself has been partially restored as only the ground floor is open to the public. The stables are being renovated at the moment, I was informed by the staff to make way for a cafe and toilets. Intended visitors should note there are no public toilets on the site at present, shame on the OPW. This is a wonderful for a family at the weekends and visit the harbour in Portumna to look at the boats.

Was recommended in the Workhouse that I see 'the other side of the coin' and it was worth doing. The gardens were lovely (we got a sunny day) and it was really peaceful. Visiting both Workhouse and Castle was sobering

Not something you should pay for, not much to see inside. It's basically just a shell.

The building is impressive, the history is one to learn about and it a must to visit the Irish Workhouse in Portumna, then decide how you feel about the castle once knowing the history. Yet the castle like I say is impressive and the kitchen garden is beautiful and the grounds stunning.
