Our guide shared with us the fact that tourism was not a big deal in Galway before U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited here in June of 1963, only 4 months before his assassination. Millions of Americans watched his visit on television and were enthralled by what they saw. Here was the great-grandson of Irish emigrants returning to the country of his ancestors. Many Irish-Americans were inspired by his visit to do the same and tourism really took off. Very pretty little park, I wish there were more benches to stop and soak up the beauty.
