The Worst Restaraunt I have ever had the displeasure of eating in.
Food - Average at the very best.
A hint for the chef: If you advertise chicken stuffed with salmon, do just that. Don't send out a plate with equal amounts of chicken and salmon (all of which was overcooked and dry). Maybe use a blender, and combine the salmon with some creme fraiche and dill, and subtly fill the chicken breast with this filling.
The Lasagne was just like a Marks and Spencer microwave packet.(maybe it was?)
Wine: Advertised was a Boarte Rioja 2006. A 2008 was brought out, already opened. The staff surely should be taught a little bit of wine etiquette?
The Service:
Poor (and I'm feeling generous).
After our main course, the waitress asked if we would like to see the desert menu, to which we replied yes.
After waiting for 30 minutes for it, we decided just to ask for the bill, as we were desparate to leave the place (we would have had a dessert each, plus a couple of Irish coffees, but instead we returned to our hotel in Inchidony and had dessert there instead (we should never have left the hotel actually)). The waitress handed me a little slip of paper (which was the bill) - any chance if presenting it in a wallet, on a plate, and maybe with an after dinner mint, or chocolate? So well done waitress - you lost a reasonable bit of business and your tip. (Everytime I go to a restaurant, I start with the assumption that I will tip the waiting staff a minimum of 10%, and only they can adversly effect that tip).
The bar man (manager?) took my money, grunted a few unintelligble words, and threw the change back at me.
Had he had the manners to thank me for my business, and ask how was my meal, I would have explained to him how bad it was. I wasn't given that chance.
Because my wife and I were not locals, we seemed to be isolated in a way, and there was no attention to detail, and a couldn't care less attitude.
This was a very poor dining experience.
The only positive is that the staff were so disorganised, they forgot to charge me for a pint of Guinness I had, and, by means of compensation for the pathetic meal, I decided not to offer payment for it either.
My Advice:
If you have an educated palate, and if you like to get value for your money, do not go to this restaraunt - you will be bitterly disappointed.
If you like eating substandard food, dealing with ill mannered and badly trained staff, and feeling most unwelcome in a restaurant, then An Sugan is the place for you!
My wife and I eat out regularly, in both Dublin and West Cork. I am not a serial complainer, in fact I have never even reviewed a restaurant before, but I feel so strongly about this experience I felt obliged to write about it.
I would like to hear views of the management of An Sugan here, but I doubt I will. I didn't make a complaint to the manager, as I felt it would be falling on deaf ears and would be a waste of my time. I could not wait to leave this restaurant and the best part of the night was when we were in a taxi heading back to our hotel!response / report this review
