Local-owned supermarkets (private ownership) sell some household goods or basic needs, not tools but rather products like superpel carbolic soap, food, drink, etc.

Sembako is an abbreviation of nine basic ingredients consisting of various food and beverage ingredients that are generally needed by the Indonesian people in general. Without food, the lives of the people of Indonesia can be disrupted because food is the main daily necessity that is mandatory to be sold freely on the market.

Below is a list of the names of the staple food staples in accordance with the decision of the Minister of Industry and Trade no. 115 / mpp / kep / 2/1998 dated February 27, 1998, namely among others:
    1. Rice and Sago
    2. Corn
    3. Vegetables and Fruits
    4. Meat (Cattle and Chicken)
    5. Milk
    6. Sugar
    7. Iodized salt / iodine
    8. Cooking Oil and Margarine
    9. Kerosene or LPG Gas

From an economic standpoint, the demand for staple goods is inelastic, namely changes in the prices of basic foods will not significantly affect the level of product demand by consumers as long as it is not too significant. If the price of the nine basic commodities increases significantly, then some consumers will switch to a similar product (substitution).

It has been the duty and responsibility of the government to maintain the stability and continuity of basic foods because they are closely related to the lives of many people. The government can carry out market operations, imports, fixing the highest or lowest prices, as well as legal action against criminals related to food staples.
