Slamet is a world-class hike in Central Java in many respects. It is 2nd highest peak in Java (at 3,428m) after Semeru (3,676m), but the highest peak in Central Java. A hard mountain to bag, you will need to be physically and mentally fit as the trek itself is very long (about 17.5km distance each way). Which means, it's best to camp a night in one of the Pos for sunrise. We did a night hike and continued all the way, spending about 15 hours and a total of 35km; not a wise move. Fatigue immediately set in, destroying plans for next hikes in the next few days. The summitting bit is the most challenging as it takes a good 2 hours up steep loose rock to the crater lip and summit ridge. It looks really close past Pos 9, but it takes a long time to get up to summit, a mind-beating experience. So, plan your time wisely. Crater view is the highlight. In terms of panorama, Sindoro and Prau are probably the best by miles of the mountain chains in Central Java. Nonethless, it's stunning. Recommended and a must-go for serious hikers.
Great mountain, challenging track, you can 4G on summit on certain spots. The bad thing: we lost a lot of stuffs, take care of you stuffs carefully.
Mount Slamet or Gunung Slamet is an active stratovolcano in the Purbalingga Regency of Central Java, Indonesia. It has a cluster of around three dozen cinder cones on the lower ...

The highest point of Central Java. Been here once through Bambangan Basecamp of Purbalingga. The view from the top was very amazing.
Mt. Slamet is the highest in Central Java and the second highest in Java. This mountain have a magnificent view, the view of Central Java landscape. On the north hikers can see the Tegal and Java sea, on the northeast hikers can see the peak of Mt. Sindoro and Mt. Sumbing, on the southeast hikers can see Purbalingga and on the south hikers can see Purwokerto. The other view is the Mt. Slamet caldera.
To get to the peak, known as Surono peak, there are many routes. Bambangan (from Purbalingga) route is the famous one. This route has nine post in total and most hikers usually camp on post #5. There are two water springs on post #3 and #5, but local said the water springs will most likely dry/empty in the Summer.
Fun facts:
- There is a few food stalls on almost every post.
- On Bambangan route, the track will continue to ascend from post #1 til the peak.
