Though a beautiful property, I cannot recommend Matahari. They call themselves a 5-star resort, but I didn't see any evidence of that other than the prices, which are absurdly high. The food at the restaurant was average and we found much better food at other resorts nearby. The breakfast buffet was really disappointing. The staff was somewhat friendly, but definitely did not impress us as much as at other high-end resorts we visited in Indonesia (such as the Plateran chain). The only part of the experience at Matahari we felt was luxurious was our amazing villa and private pool. From what locals told us, this is a resort for very wealthy Europeans since the owner is German and promotes the property there. Nothing against that at all, but I'd suggest you look at other high-end hotels in the area instead. I wish I had better things to say as the owner and his wife have a beautiful story about how they fell in love and created this resort. But if you read other reviews on Google and TripAdvisor, you'll see my feedback is pretty consistent with what others say.
