In 1986 at the 16th Congress in Padang, the HMI (Islamic Student Association) finally agreed to accept the single principle of Pancasila as its organizational principle, because of the reasons for saving HMI from the threat of dissolution by the New Order regime.

Furthermore, the HMI who recognized the results of the 16th Congress in Padang was called the HMI DIPO (Receiving Pancasila), due to the secretariat on Jalan Diponegoro, Jakarta.

Whereas the HMI that still maintains the Islamic principle is later known as the HMI MPO or the Organizational Rescue Council (Refusing Pancasila).

After the acceptance of the single principle, HMI based on Jalan Diponegoro is the only HMI recognized by the state.

The HMI DIPO and HMI MPO cannot be put together anymore because of the very large differences in character and organizational traditions between the two. The HMI DIPO appears to be more accommodating in character and pragmatic, while the HMI MPO maintains its critical attitude towards the government. Until now, HMI is one of the largest and oldest student organizations in Indonesia.

Anies Baswedan, the Governor of DKI Jakarta who is also a former Minister of National Education in the Jokowi Cabinet, is one of the figures born from the HMI MPO.
