GKJW Surabaya Congregation, its official name. But better known as GKJW Gubeng. This is related to the historical location of Surabaya in the past.

This colonial era church building is gothic style. Philosophically theologically, the front facade means "Porta Caeli" aka "gapura ning swarga" (the gateway to heaven).

This building is actually equivalent to the construction period with old buildings in line with it. Such as: NIAS (FK Unair), STOVIT (FKG Airlangga University), and RSOP Karangmenjangan (RSUD Dr. Sutomo). That is around 1924. So that it can be categorized as BCB (Cultural Heritage Building).

However, 'Jawi Surabaya Christian Community', aka the Java Java Christian Community itself (the name before there was an official institution incorporated in 1931) had its community first. Long before this building was built in this place. Around 1847, since the beginning of the original Javanese Surabaya baptism event (in the sense of birth place).

In the midst of the onslaught of globalization, but the congregation in this place, at one hour of worship (morning) every week still maintains the use of Javanese.

The contextual Javanese tradition and Christian faith which is still inherited here is the implementation of the Undhuh-Undhuh (HRUU) Feast. This Thanksgiving Day departs from the Javanese agrarian culture.

GKJW (Greja Kristen Jawi Wetan) sebuah gereja yang didirikan karena keinginan warga untuk membentuk sebuah persekutuan ibadah. Gedung gereja didirikan pada masa kolonial Belanda, yang merupakan GKJW tertua di Kota Surabaya.
