An amazing place on the eastern coast of Selayar Island.
Eco Resort Selayar boasts two sites that are used in alternance depending on the season and which way the winds blow.
In Tropical areas, indeed, the monsoons are large-scale seasonal reversals of the wind regime : for half of the year, winds blow from the west (in Indonesia, that period is from October to March) while for the other half, they blow from the east (from April to September).
So Eco Resort Selayar has two locations: one (which is reviewed here) on the east coast of the island, perfect for the months of October to March/April, while the other (that I hope to visit one day) will welcome you from May to September/October.
Not only will this alternance ensure that you get a calm, welcoming sea, it also prevents the plastic pollution endemic to coastal areas to wash up on your shore and will let you experience a better environment.
THE EAST COAST RESORT
If you are looking for a desert island getaway, look no further!
The Eco Resort is located on a 2 km stretch of fine sand beach that can only be reached by boat from a nearby harbour. No noise, no light pollution, nothing but the few guests and of course, Denis, your host, a jovial French guy, with perfect English and Elty, his Indonesian wife, who also speaks English fluently.
The resort is made of six comfortable traditional wooden bungalows, complete with a nice bathroom and a verandah. Each bungalow sleeps two people. A larger structure houses the kitchen and the restaurant, where three great meals are served every day.
The resort is nestled at the foot of a steep hill, covered in dense rainforest, that provides water and serves as a wonderful backdrop to your stay. Solar arrays have been installed and will be commissioned in 2017 to reduce further the resort ecological footprint. While the bungalows have been built with local timber selected from the nearby hill and renewable bamboo, while the decoration and furnishing of the bungalows is mostly constructed of driftwood, the resort still needs a solution to the garbage it generates, even though every care is taken to avoid relying on plastics.
It is well worth getting up at dawn to witness the magnificent sunrises, where the light plays with the usual low clouds over the horizon. And later on during the day, Denis will take you snorkeling or scuba diving, to a protected natural park where fishing and anchoring boats is forbidden, the drop being located about 100 meters only from the beach. You will see Turtles, Barracudas, Napoleons, and all kinds of reef fish.
