Situated off the northern tip of Sulawesi equidistant from popular and crowded Bunaken and Lembeh islands Bangka is still a well kept secret. Only five dive resorts exist spaced out well across the island each offering a unique proposition in terms of accommodation. The island has no paved roads, cars or corporate development and feels truly untouched. The main villages of Kahuku and Lihunu are populated by genuinely friendly local people to whom tourists are a bit of a novelty. The nature on land is plentiful with populations of Tarsier, cuscus and many kinds of birds and insects. The biggest attraction for me is the scuba diving with an assortment of all types of sites from breathtaking walls and pinnacles to shallow beautiful coral gardens and critter laden white sand muck sites. The sites cast of critters changes throughout the year and means the diving doesn't become samey on multiple visits (or if you live here!). Best to visit outside of the rainy season (December to March) and avoid the windy season July and August as this limits comfortable access to the southern dive sites. You won't see big fish or turtles regularly here however the main attraction is the sheer variety of species of fish and the strange and special critters like hairy frogfish, blurring octopus and ornate ghost pipefish which form the headlines.
