ST. NIKOLA CHURCH – MUSTER
The Benedictines from Biševo moved to Vis and in the 13th century built a church and a convent on the hill above the present-day Komiža and dedicated it to St. Nicolas. The patron saint of Komiža, St. Nikola (or locally Mikula) protects passengers, sailors and fishermen. The church of St. Nikola, i.e. Muster (from Greek Monasterion) is a parish church and graveyard in Komiža and the first church-fortress in Dalmatia. The southern tower, which is one of the oldest in Dalmatia, and the northern church nave covered in hemispherical vault and the semicircular apse of the shrine have been preserved ever since the 13th century. The single nave church was extended in the 16th century toward north with the new nave in gothic style. In the 17th century a huge Baroque nave was built on the southern side. Two more naves were added to the south (the farthest southern nave was constructed in gothic style). As the result, the church has five naves today. The construction for defense has been reinforced in the 1645 with line of forts built in the Vauban system. In the end of the 17th century, the shrine was extended in Baroque flare. The northern church tower of the monastery was there, above the first part of the Romanesque nave probably at the beginning of the 13th century, but it got its final look in the end of the 18th century when it was finished in the Baroque style. The Benedictines left the monastery in the 15th century. Afterward,s the block of monastery buildings with the cloister, which was situated between the church and the southern tower, started to decline. The remains were knocked down when the church was enlarged in the 1695, and the stone that remained was probably used for the new church.
Each year, on the holy day of this saint, a great ceremony is held in front of the church. The statue of St. Nicolas is taken out and carried around the church within procession. On that day, the 6th of December, an obsolete fishing boat is hauled from the promenade of Komiža with worthy hands of fishermen to be burnt in front of the church. This ritual ceremony which unites the Christian religiosity and universal symbolism of revival and renovation is the central event, attractive for the tourists as well.
During centuries, the construction of Muster has played an important role in the life of the island and it has preserved valuable book collections and sacral items until today.response / report this review -
