Visiting Trujillo via a cruise ship is a unique, but wonderful experience. In order to get to shore, we had to ride on a boat from Cruise ship to port. Get the cruise tender cards early because you can show up late with an early card. Once on shore, we immediately ran into a Banana Coast Tours gentleman at dock and shared how they never responded to me about zip-line and beach tour. He shared they no longer offered. Then I explained how my family wanted to hike the National Park. He shared that there “might” be independent guides outside the port gate (near white building). He also shared that we should get a taxi to the Villa Brinley hotel (should cost $3 per person to go there). Villa Brinkley is a hotel at top of road, very close to the National Park entrance. Small water bottles for sale at port store for $1. Walked about a quarter of mile along dirt path to outside port security gate. There we approached a cab and spoke to Eric. He said he could take us to Villa Brinkley for $3/person. As we spoke to Eric, another guy walked up to us, George. George shared he would take us on any guided tour we wanted. He said he could also take us through the National Park. I asked how much. He said normally it’s $15/person (there was 4 of us), but we could pay him what we liked. This price is very affordable compared to the limited tour options provided by cruise ship. Eric then drove us up to National Park with George in car. Along the drive, Eric & George shared what the buildings, town square and sites were along the way. Eric took us past Villa Brinkley to the entrance of National Park. There was a gate with (2) security guards. Didn’t cost anything nor any paper work to go in park. We started hiking up a dirt road which was quite washed out. (10) to (15) minutes up the road, we heard heavy water and saw a path towards the river. We took it and then started hiking up the mountain via the river path. It was amazing. Saw small waterfalls where we could swim in river too. Then took path from river toward the road, but the road was then a single path. Hiked a good hour and an half up mountain. Saw so much lush, rainforest beauty. While in the park, there weren’t good views down to the city or bay while hiking in park, but lots of birds, butterflies and vegetation. Hike was wet and muddy higher up. Then hiked down, rested and snacked along river. Everywhere within rainforest or town, George was amazing. Very close to the National Park entrance are very nice homes with large walls for protection. The nicest one was either the Mayor’s or Major’s.. Then hiked down road towards town, and then walked through downtown Trujillo. The general stores are simple, open air and play loud music. The people never bothered or begged. We visited an old cemetery, which was beautiful and very well kept. In there is the grave of the pirate, “William Walker.” Went by the town square where there are (2) banks and (1) ATM. I used the ATM to get out 2,000 Honduran Lempira with no issue (approximately $85 USD). It’s on the corner of (1) of the banks & the ATM is inside a private glass room which is locked when inside using it. Then hiked down to the shore and walked towards poorer section of town. George originally wanted to take us to this (1) restaurant, but owner/cook wasn’t there, so we walked to “Chico’s Place” towards the end of the beach strip. People and food were great. Sat right on water. There were some locals eating too. Only one other cruise person there. The place didn’t take credit card, only cash. After lunch, we walked to a beach spot and enjoyed for an hour. 5 or 6 kids joined us and hung out. Didn’t bug us. If you see George, he’s great and trustworthy. Use him and you won’t regret it.
