Made in Roatan

When we first came here to Roatan we weren't entirely sure what we would be doing here but we knew we wanted to HELP! The needs here on the island are great; there is so much poverty. It can be heart breaking at times. But as we were giving out food, school supplies and clothing we often wondered if we were simply creating a sense of unhealthy dependence on the 'great white handout'. We talked with some of our local friends and came up with the idea of building a small shop on his mother's front yard, close to the cruise ship dock that would sell only things 'Made in Roatan' and only from people who truly needed help!

We volunteer our time on cruise ship days and we 'represent' the artists. We aren't just selling products, we are sharing stories about their lives. Sometimes the artists come to the shop (we love that!) and they are able to talk with the people. It is quite an experience to come to the shop because I see people's heart's soften as they grasp the vision of 'helping people help themselves'!
