  黎曦明 Lai Hei Ming (MBBS, year 6), the only student from Hong Kong this year, has recently won the 11th China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award (第十一屆中國青少年科技創新獎) in recognition of his outstanding innovation achievements.

  His OPTIClear solution can turn tissues transparent, allowing researchers to take 3D images using optical sectioning microscopy. This breakthough can shorten the time taken to unveil the structure of various tissues and help researchers study tissue pathology and dementia. He has applied for a patent for the technology.

  [Gifts for Research] #EndowedProfessorships #明德教授 Professor Anne Lee Wing-Mui 李詠梅, holder of the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation Professorship in Holistic Cancer Care, has been vigorous in her research into nasopharyngeal cancer, which starts in the nasal passages above the back of the throat. It is rare in the West but common in Southeast Asia and southern China, particularly Guangdong. She has had a leading role in revolutionising the staging system, which is crucial for predicting prognoses and guiding clinicians in treatment decisions.   每年，香港大學主修「生態學及生物多樣性」的同學會在開放日展示及介紹一些本地動植物，向大眾推廣保育生物多樣性的重要。訪客的提問往往是：「呢隻嘢食唔食得啊？佢哋好唔好食呢？」弄得同學們一臉尷尬無奈。

  無可厚非，不少動植物可供食用。由不同物種煮出來的食物有不同味道、營養和質感，大大豐富了我們的味覺享受。「背脊向天人所食」和「物以罕為貴」乃華人社會飲食文化的潛藏信念，所以難怪大眾一見到罕有珍貴的物種，便想把它放進口中品嘗。

  其實，生物多樣性與人類生存息息相關，亦是21世紀孩子們必須要掌握的重要知識。生物多樣性包括三方面：物種多樣性、生境多樣性及基因多樣性。

  香港大學學生會理學會生態學及生物多樣性學會（下稱學會）的成員最近印製了一本有毒植物指南《毒木不木獨：有毒植物遊》，以插畫和相片羅列記載34種本地常見有毒植物。成員Betty說，有毒植物其實不可怕，除非是四大毒草的一花一草，一羊一馬——洋金花、斷腸草、羊角拗、馬錢子。
