Great service.
Review of the Forgaty Store on Water Street.
I remember this store ever since, from days when I was but a child .I think it was built by a British business man : MR. WILLIAM FORGARTY....
A favourite shopping spot of my parents during the 1970s- 1980s before this new management.
The store became successful alongside the likes of : BOOKERS.....BETTENCOURTS....G.N.T.C.............CENTRAL GARAGE.
Then one day after school the BETTENCOURTS store was seen all alight with fire and flames. Even after crossing the ferry , we went up at the back platform of the NURSES HOSTEL , BEST HOSPITAL and watched the dark and often dense red smoke filling up the sky over the demerara river.
Forgartys was left alone and companionless.
Soon they sold out afterwards to a board of local businessmen and became a LAPARKAN HOLDING.
Now they are all rented out as spaces / booths , for various business activities therein .
I remembered my dad taking me there to ride the mechanical pony which they had therein . Many families were placing their kids one after another to get the pony ride. My turn soon came .I was shy and embarrassed. I also had my weight measured on the scale they had on the floor nearby . This was around 1974.
My dad even shared a jovial friendship with the elevator operator ; a guy with a lame and limping handicapped leg , dressed with military styled hat and uniform. He also seem to know the bag bay guys and they would respond with equal warmth and joviality whenever he called over to them .
My parents took me there to meet SANTA CLAUS once , twice; maybe more than twice (?) also. Used to be a good place to buy books and stationaries; shoes, bags and clothes. Nice elevator rides in those days ; well dressed man- servants and bag bay guys earning an extra dollar. The atmosphere is all changed now . More busy and sweaty affair you will see now .
Long ago the salvation army would be there
ringing their bells and singing Christian soldier songs. At Christmas a Santa would be there to shake your hands and meet families. But it is all gone now .Different time...Different Era. Now ..... yes ?
A few months ago, I had reason to visit this store. The opening hours stated that they would be open at 8:30am.
I arrived at 8:15, and found about 15 people waiting before me. A few minutes before opening time, staff started arriving. They entered, someone started mopping the floors, staff started turning on computers, and chatting. They didn't seem as though they were in a hurry to open. While this was taking place, the line outside was getting longer. About 5 or 6 persons, who I assume were acquaintances of the security officer manning the entrance, arrived and stood just in front of the door. At about 8:45am, the door was finally opened, and these persons marched right in, while everyone else who were waiting before, went in after.
The line was pretty long, and it took me an additional 20 minutes before I got to a representative. Once I got there, the staff was friendly and professional, but I was too annoyed at that point to be appreciative of this.
Overall, their standard suck. They need to do a lot more, especially when it comes to customer service.
Fogarty's has many smaller stores housed inside the building selling a variety of products on the ground floor. On the first floor you will find clothing, computers and a travel agency.
Great selection of clothing & access to other convenient stores around
