ES UNA DE LAS IGLESIAS MAS ANTIGUAS DE GUATEMALA, AQUÍ FUE ASESINADO EL SACERDOTE FRANCISCO STANLEY ROTHER DECLARADO HACE POCO BEATO POR EL PAPA FRANCISCO. ESTE SACERDOTE ES CONOCIDO EN EL MUNICIPIO Y AHORA A NIVEL MUNDIAL COMO EL PADRE APLA´S.

This church was undergoing a lot of work when I visited so did not exactly have that peaceful power that large churches can have, but was interesting nonetheless. The plaques when you go in have information written in English and Spanish, and reveal some fascinating recent history about the sufferings of the town. It is a small church with a nice garden and fountain, worth a visit and takes very little time to see everything.

There is so much history with this church and the important role that it played during the Civil War. There are wooden carvings on the alter telling both the Mayan and Christian biblical stories. It’s a fascinating blend of Catholic and Mayan.

Very cool church, especially how it faces the volcano across the lake.
