As a former teacher, I highly recommend Orbita Spanish School to anyone who is traveling to Guatemala. It's conveniently located in San Pedro and the view from the classroom is even better in person. My homestay family was fantastic and my teacher was really nice. I believe that Rene's (the owner) structured curriculum is what makes Orbita stand out. The pre-made booklets and worksheets helped me accelerate my Spanish. They also had really delicious snacks during the breaks!

Since there's always something to improve, I would say that there were moments where my teacher seemed a little checked out. It could have been the fact that my lesson was in the afternoon and she could have been tired. So try to get a morning class if you can (they are very popular so book early!).

To anyone looking to take Spanish lessons in San Pedro, I would strongly recommend taking lessons at Orbita. When I first arrived in San Pedro, I had committed to taking 2 weeks-worth of classes. After completing my first week, I knew that I wanted to extend my studies at the school and committed to one full month; which eventually lead to 8 weeks. The school has a solid curriculum and the teachers there apply differential instruction techniques, in order to adjust to your learning style. The school has weekly activities, which are fun and have proven to be a great way to get to know other students. The view from the school is every bit as picturesque as advertised. Being able to look out onto the beautiful, bright and sparkling lake every day during class helps to alleviate much of the stress and frustration sometimes associated with learning a new language. At times, it truly was breathtaking.

My homestay experience, as seemed to be the case with other students I’ve spoken with, was also great. The layout of the house that I stayed at was nice, private and spacious. I was provided with three square meals a day. And, since my home stay family often ate with my housemates and I, meal times provided us with many opportunities to practice our conversational Spanish. I want to thank the staff at Orbita and the family that I stayed with for giving me a truly rich and rewarding experience.

Best experience of my life. I studied here for 4 weeks. The family was amazing and helped me practice my Spanish so much! The owner Rene is such a honest kind person. My teacher Faby was great and thought me so much. I took 4hr/day classes and never got bored. The school always has amazing views of the lake an offers really fun activities weekly. I really wish I was staying longer and I'm going to miss it here so much!

My experience at Orbita was truly incredible. I learned so much in the 4 weeks I was there and met so many great people. The school is located right on Lake Atitlan and the views are amazing. You set the pace of your learning and the teachers are very dedicated to helping you understand and speak Spanish. I would HIGHLY recommend this school!!

In general Guatemala offers quality Spanish immersion classes and most schools provide adequate services. However, after 5 weeks of study with the Orbita Spanish School in 2017, I find that it surpasses its peers and excels in two ways: an organized curriculum with an emphasis on interactive approach; and a group of dedicated and caring teaching staff who monitor your progress and adjust their methodology as required, and encourage you to utilize your newly acquired language skills in all possible ways both inside and outside of the school. In addition, importantly, the Orbita Spanish School maintains a great network of homestay host families who offer the students an unrivaled opportunity not only to keep on practising the language, but also to understand the unique cultures and the challenges of the local community. I benefited tremendously with the homestay program, and I have been greatly enriched by my study in Orbita. I highly recommend the school and consider it the best value for money.

Fantastic school! the curriculum is both helpful and logically structured. Grammatical rules are the basis of each lesson, progressing slowly as you learn to tour level of understanding. the teachers are sharp and patient. the family that runs the school are most hospitable

When I came to study at Orbita my intention was to stay 1-2 weeks. I ended up studying there for 6 weeks, after which I am now able to speak and understand spanish pretty well. The school program, the materials and the teachers are very professional. I won the opportunity to study with two teachers - Fabiola and Eduardo who were both excellent teachers and friends. When I had some difficulties with my studies, Rene the schoolmaster talked to me and helped me change my point of view and therefore study much better. After more conversations I learned to appreciate his uniquely way of thinking, and learned from him a few things about generosity and positivity. The school has a great family atmosphere and offers a lot of after school activities where you get to bond with the other students and teachers. Also, my host family were just amazing, made me feel at home from the first day, even we could not yet communicate very well, and eventually became like a second family for me. To sum things up, my experience at the school was very positive and I recommend it with all my heart.

We thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent at Orbita in January and February of this year, so much so that we decided to add one more week to our time there for a total of 5 weeks of study. And we plan to return next year for another round of lessons! We also very much enjoyed the home-stay which was an important part of the "immersion" experience. Our very first night in Guatemala, before even starting at the school, we had to communicate in Spanish when we ate our first meal with our host family! We were in a family with children, and we enjoyed eating with them and attempting to converse - that got easier as the weeks went on and our hosts were very patient with us and willing to instruct us to help with our learning. The food was also very good. My teacher, Theresa, was excellent and supplemented the lessons based on my interests, and as part of the practice of conversation we had many interesting discussions and so got to know each other better. The biggest reveal to me was the similarities in life experiences, in spite of cultural, language, and age differences. The curriculum designed by Rene is very well organized and includes lots of interesting material on Mayan culture as well as "philosophical observations" that inspire a positive outlook on life. The curriculum was actually what made us choose Orbita over other schools, and we were not disappointed. At the end of our time at Orbita we were able to travel in Guatemala and understand most of what we heard - even taking two different tours given in Spanish with very little difficulty. Pretty good for a couple of "older" folks who were beginners in Spanish. :)

I attended Orbita a couple of years ago. It was a lot of hard work for me but I found the teachers and staff to be caring, hard working and very professional. Rene has put together a great curriculum along with fantastic teachers that makes learning Spanish fun. The views from the classrooms cannot be beat and the snacks provided by the school during break time always hit the spot. I cherish the 4 weeks that I spent with my teacher, Faby. She was a fantastic person who was eager to help me learn Spanish even though I was a slow learner. She was always so calm and patient when I would forget a word or two. I wish I could go back to San Pedro again and visit my friends at Orbita Spanish School! I do miss all of you.

I spent 7 weeks learning Spanish at Orbita and loved every moment. The location is good and all of the teachers are friendly and a lot of fun. My teacher Elizabeth was great and I enjoyed the lessons that we had together. Rene (the owner) and his family are lovely and they really make you feel comfortable. The curriculum that Rene has designed himself is very detailed and the structure is great. Also, the activities
at the school are really fun too. Thanks a lot guys, I'll be back at some point. Hasta luego.

Having studied for 5+ weeks here while staying with a great host family arranged by the school, I can say it was a very, very memorable and engaging experience. Rene and his staff are ultra helpful with anything you might need and everyone I met staying with an arranged family loved it. Very safe location and easy to get to from Antigua. San Pedro and the surrounding towns are all unique and fun to wander around. Spanish lessons here are comprehensive and instructors are happy to tweak the curriculum to what you might be interested in (i.e. travel, business, etc). My teacher, Eduardo, was very patient and understood how to best make me learn the language. Not to mention the school itself has incredible views of the lake. Would visit again in a heartbeat.

I did 1 week of classes here and I learned a lot. We worked off a verb list that was grouped by similar conjugation rules. This helped in the memorization process. There was also a workbook that we did exercises in. All the material I got to keep. The location is close to the boat taxis so that was very convenient and the setting has a beautiful view of the lake. The teaching is one on one and I LOVED my teacher (Fabi). Add to this the yummy treats you would be served on break made the whole experience awesome. If I ever have the chance again I would not hesitate to take more classes here.

Great school, rene developed his own material. We had some young teachers but they were pretty good and the method is great. Views from the building are amazing.

I just spent 3 weeks at Orbita's school and I had a great time. It's by the dock and the tourist area but also has a shortcut right behind the school that puts you right by the local market for some scrumptious tamales or tortas! And my homestay was awesome. They told me the REAL prices for things I was getting charged at the gringo rate! Ahora yo se! Y la vista de mi escuela era PERFECTA!
