When I landed in Guatemala I developed hiccups. 72 hours later still hiccuping I went to a local physician who discovered atrial fibrillation (no connection to the hiccups) and suggested I see cardiologist Dr. Marcony Juracan in Quetzaltenango. I got an appointment the next day and was diagnosed with congestive heart disease. I was devastated but he prescribed 5 medications and assured me there was no reason to return home as this was manageable as long as I kept my blood pressure low by carrying no more than 5 pounds, going slowly and keeping calm. My partner and I sent home 30 pounds of stuff and finished our travel for 30 days of birding and hiking, admittedly at a considerably slower pace. Dr. Marcony was most professional, helpful and correct with his diagnosis. Back home and two months later I am still using the same medications he prescribed as I wear a monitor for 30 days for precise evaluation of my condition. Dr. Marcony is as good as they come and better than most.
