WHAT IS KISSIDUGU?
Kissidugu — a “safe place” or “place of refuge” — in the Kissi language of Guinea, West Africa
Kissidugu Foundation is committed to education, cultural preservation, health and well-being.
We are building the Kissidugu School of Music, Dance & Education in Guinea, West Africa as well as providing clean water filters, solar lights, medicine and the like.
In the United States, Kissidugu Foundation puts on the Camp Merveilles drum and dance conferences, which are incredible opportunities for growth, study, friendship, community, fun and health. Additionally Founder Gabriel Fara Tolno provides residency trainings in music and dance for Universities, independent companies, performing arts programs, workshops and youth in the United States and abroad.
Kissidugu Dance & Drum Theatre was founded in 2004 by Gabriel Fara Tolno after his first dance & drum conference, Camp Merveilles Colorado, in 2003. It was a thriving company in Boulder under Fara's direction until 2014. In 2014, Kissidugu Foundation became official having received non-profit status. Fara decided to focus on building the Kissidugu School in Guinea and sharing the drum, dance and culture in the United States through Camp Merveilles in different locations; these are the two primary focuses of the Kissidugu Foundation.
Since 2003, Camp Merveilles has grown to three locations: Hawaii, Arizona & Utah. The Colorado conference ran for thirteen years in Colorado, with a faculty of 10-18 artists annually, it became quite the gathering place representing Guinea, Congo, Zimbabwe and Mali. Due to venue availability and new opportunities for the conference, in August of 2016, Flagstaff, Arizona became the new home to the "Gathering" Merveilles. Incredible land and beauty surround this secluded site and we are happy to call Flagstaff home!
Join us for a Camp Merveilles: Utah; MAY Flagstaff; AUGUST and Hawaii; NOVEMBER.
