The King's Bastion Leisure Centre celebrates its 10th Anniversary on the 28th February 2018. To commemorate the event, we will be handing out complimentary game vouchers to users of the Bowling and Ice Rink on the day.

When the King's Bastion was built, it was the most important defensive position of the Rock's westerly defences. Its shape was based on traditional ideas of bastion fortification: it was a large arrow headed construction which projected from the curtain wall into the sea. The land in front of the bastion was reclaimed from the sea much later, at the beginning of the 20th Century as part of the works for Gibraltar's new dockyard, by which time the bastion had changed role.
The location of the King's Bastion is significant because it commanded almost the entirety of Gibraltar's western sea defences and nearby anchorages. It housed casemates, which were ideal as barrack accommodation, so it became the ideal command post for defending the attacks of the Franco- Spanish floating batteries on 13th September, 1782.
The mid to late 19 Century was a relatively peaceful period in Gibraltar's history but the King's Bastion was kept up-to-date, keeping pace with new military technology.
By 1859, twenty five guns were mounted on the bastion. They consisted of seventeen 32 pounders (pdrs), two 10-inch howitzers and six 8-inch smooth bore guns. The most significant alteration was made in 1874 when the embrasures along front faces of the bastion were removed to mount a total of 5 Rifled Muzzle-Loading (RML) guns. By 1878 all five guns were finally in place and remained in commission until 1902. By this time the bastion's many casemates were no longer used as accommodation, but now housed coal stores and one of Gibraltar's first electricity generating stations.
The bastion was altered once again in preparation for the 20th Century military conflicts. A number of concrete bunkers were placed on its stone walls and the bastion took on a function as a look out post but also mounted a 6-pdr 6cwt anti-tank gun. In later times of peace, the bastion took on the duties of saluting battery, using four 25-pdrs for the purpose.
In the 1960s the bastion's military use came to an end and was once again modified, to house a new, this time civil, power generating station. The station was designed by local architect Natalio Langdon and was opened in October 1961. It closed down during the 1990s and was eventually demolished in 2005. The original bastion façades were then re-exposed.
Today, the bastion has been totally redeveloped into one of Gibraltar's premiere leisure facilities, the latest lease of life for this important monument.

King's Bastion - Fitness Gym
The King’s Bastion Leisure Centre Fitness Gym opened its doors to the public on Wednesday 1st October 2008. The Fitness Gym is located on two floors at the southern end of the Line Wall Road entrance to the King’s Bastion Leisure Centre.
The King’s Bastion Leisure Centre Fitness Gym boasts an extensive range of equipment for use in a range of fitness regimes including strength training, cardiovascular and aerobic training. Additionally, the Gym is programmed to hold Spinning classes and Tai Chi sessions in a holistic approach to fitness, catering for as wide a range as possible of users. Full changing room and shower facilities are also provided.
Furthermore, an area within the Gym has been designated for persons with mobility problems and the facilities include full access for the disabled including a lift and separate changing and shower facilities.
Qualified staff, under the management of the Gibraltar Sports & Leisure Authority, will supervise the use of the facilities, ensuring their proper use, and will also provide the required induction courses which are renewable every twelve months.

King's Bastion -Youth Zone
The Kings’ Bastion Leisure Centre is proud to offer the ideal place for the youth to meet, hang around with friends and enjoy all the facilities in a safe and enjoyable environment. You may choose from bowling, ice skating, surfing the net in our internet lounge, or have a go in one of our state or the art amusement machines….the choice is yours. The Youth lounge and bar located on level 2 via the North Terrace is a place you can chill out with your friends, have a go on the Nintendo Wii or a enjoy a chat and a soft drink. The bar and lounge opens every day from 4pm to midnight and weekends and bank holidays from 10am to midnight. Entrance is restricted to people between the ages of 12 to 18yrs.
At the weekends, the youth disco provides entertainment for age groups between 12 to 14yrs, please check the events programme for further information.

Boyd's - Entertainment & Disco
Boyd’s Wine Bar is now open under new Management. It is an ideal venue for hosting corporate events, wedding receptions, school reunions and other types of private functions. The facilities include a Bar for over 18s only and a fully equipped Disco lounge, as well as a spacious terrace.
Throughout the year, there will be special performances by top international DJs as well as other entertainment acts (please check our Events page regularly for details).

King's Bastion - Ice Skating
The Ice Skating Rink is open from 10.00am to 11.00pm every day.
All sessions are supervised by our trained staff who are qualified in administering First Aid. For safety reasons, we only allow a maximum number of fifty skaters at a time on the ice rink. Children under the age of seven must be accompanied by an adult (we may allow younger skaters by themselves but only if the parent/guardian signs a consent form).
Opening Hours: 7 days a week from 10.00am to 11.00pm
Please note that the Ice Rink may be closed for short periods during the day for maintenance of the surface. We also offer Ice Skating coaching sessions. During the sessions, the Ice Rink may be closed to the general public.
