The monastery was founded in the 6th century; it was destroyed many times, as many times restored. From Mtskheta 9 kilometers to drive. Located in a picturesque valley, the beautiful Place for visiting, an amazing place with history. The monastry is in secluded location, surrounded by mountans from 3 sides, there are monks still living there. Church is also interesting, paintings on the wall are different from typical georgian style.

A great place two dozen kilometers from the popular Mtskheta and Jvari. An ancient monastery surrounded by wooded cliffs. Graves and chapels, silence and peace. Very few tourists. A good place where you can meet the sunset (climbing on a rock nearby). Spend money and ask your driver to take you here.

Unbilivebely nice place with a perfect road right to the entrance. Very easy to get from Tbilisi and Mskheta (just 5-10 minutes drive from Mtskheta). Beautiful in any period of the year. Must visit place.

The first monastic community at this place was founded by the 6th-century monk Shio (Geo:შიო), one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers who came to Georgia as Christian missionaries

The Shio-Mgvime monastery is a medieval monastic complex in Georgia. It is located in a narrow limestone canyon on the northern bank of the Kura River, some 30 km from Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital.
