    ***BON VOYAGE***

As many of you may know, I am moving up North to start a new job as a Senior Instructor, in Moray. I just want to use this platform to thank every person I have came in to contact with over the past 2 years. Those who have came to and supported our FIT30 classes. Those who have joined our amazing fitness suite. And those who have taken the time to listen to my fantastic banter… I wish you all the best and success in the future.

Here are my 5 best tips:

    ...

    1. Do the basics well & keep it simple- if there's something you're unsure of, ask a member of staff…

    2. If it hurts, stop- If you are feeling any discomfort or soreness during a particular exercise, STOP! change the exercise. Work a different muscle group. This is ok!

    3. It's all about You- Your workout, Your time, Your body, Your Best! Focus on the things which are going to help You improve, not the person next to you. If you can do 5 squats in 30 seconds- THAT’S AMAZING!!! CELEBRATE THAT!!! It's the small victories that improve us.

    4. Make it FUN!!- Already I hear many voices going "very good, Jonny- exercise & fun, in the same sentence?!" But what is life without a laugh and a joke? If you see exercise as a punishment, well I'm sorry but it won't last. If you find a way to enjoy exercise, it will last and you'll achieve your goals.

    5. BE AWESOME!

Also, I would like to thank everyone for their very thoughtful cards, messages and gifts. You didn't have to do that but I grately appreciate it and will miss all the fantastic people who come to Ayr Fitness Suite!

    Don't be a stranger.

    Best wishes,

    Jonny

UWS participated in University Mental Health Day on 7th March 2019, by staging a Walk a Mile event on Ayr, Dumfries, Lanarkshire and Paisley campus, which resulted in over £600 being raised for mental health charities.

Feedback, at the end of each mile, was very positive, with ‘walkers’ noting that they felt ‘good after the walk’, ‘more comfortable talking about mental health’, ‘more positive’ and ‘great – alive!’

Others noted that it was ‘great to see so many people do it an...d get a chance to meet others’ and that they would ‘like to do something like that often and on a regular basis’.

The NHS recommends five steps we can all take to improve our mental wellbeing, which are

Connect – with people around you

Be Active – you don’t need to go to the gym – take a walk!

Keep Learning – about others and people around you

Give to Others – and time is a precious gift

Be Mindful – be aware of the present moment and the world around you

So Walking a Mile not only ticks all of the above – but it’s also an opportunity to get away from your desk and into the fresh air (weather-permitting)! And encourage your colleagues to come along – there’s an added benefit in that: one walker noted last time that no e-mails arrived during that period, because the whole team participated!

Given the very positive feedback we received about the original walk, we’re arranging one more walk on each campus, on Wednesday 29th May, taking the same routes as the original ones.

All you have to do is turn up at Reception on each campus (Dudgeon House in Dumfries) just before 12:30 (1pm in London)
