Lovely walks around the mill ponds, a hidden gem😊
A great unique walking trail. Takes you along the river, past abandoned mill buildings and then around the dam itself. The path is quite overgrown and not always clear so we had to keep checking the picture we took of the map at the start of the trail. Parking not great, only a small layby at the side of the road. Not ideal for children and prams but definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a new area to explore.
Nice for a dog walk, very muddy so recommend it on sunny days
The Upperlands Mill and Dam trail is located just north of Maghera and takes in the industrial history of the local Linen mill. You can park in a small parking area near the information board, a metal sculpture and a flagpole. There are no way markers, so take note of the map on the information board. I suggest you walk down Riverview Terrace, towards Glenville Terrace and the first of the derelict buildings. You'll come across an old house with a red watermill wheel and later pass the Clark offices and large linen mill. Initially I was disappointed with the destruction and dereliction of these historic buildings, but the further I walked the more fascinating it became. Once you pass the buildings, you discover four lake like dams and woodland that you can wander around. By the end, I appreciated the history of the mills that created the Upperlands village. It's an amazing place to visit and you could imagine it in its heyday. So don't be put off by the derelict buildings and you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's easy to spend at least 45 minutes here. Local people come here with their children and dogs, but it's not a busy place.
Lovely walk around the dams. Peaceful on a beautiful summers day.
Not a well tramped walk nor a good established path.
No way markers on the track so photograph the sign at the road! Walk circumnavigates the old mill dams, which are now disused. Not suitable for elderly or v.young or prams. V quiet and im not even 100% sure its public right of way, but there is a sign there to show the trail so..... wear good boots. Park in the post office car park! Some areas are v v wet and there are a lot of old structures around. Slippery in places.
