Description

The Royal Standard was started up by Harry Hopkins in 1881 as a public house. It was taken over by William Douglas 20 years later who has run the pub for 9 years. He died and his wife Mary J Douglas became the land lady in 1920 for 5 years. The pub had 4 other land lords before it was turned into a tea house until Ruby Wood (of Ruby's) turned it back into a public house. She was firm but fair to her customers and most locals talk about their memories from her time. The Royal Standard has became a well known pub among sailors all around the world. There were military memoria, donated to the pub by sailors traveling around the world. Ruby's family kept the pub until 2013. When they left, they decided to auction the collections. Locals of the pub were heart broken, but they started to donate new militaria items since a new tenant is in The Royal Standard who is happy to bring the place back to it's past glory. If you aren't very shy, you can have a brief chat with the locals about their travels or times of Ruby. Luckily, Basil (a local legend) is still in our team and will probably be in the pub during your visit. Lets not forget that, it is believed Mary, who had run the pub in 1920s, has not left the pub completely. She is seen by people in a few occasions, either behind the bar or looking out from the windows. Who knows maybe looking for her husband....
