ICS is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you to work as a volunteer on a development programme overseas. Funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) and run by some of the most respected organisations fighting poverty through volunteering, ICS is the UK’s foremost global volunteer programme for young people.
As an ICS volunteer you will spend a life-changing 10-12 weeks working directly alongside local volunteers on projects that have been specifically chosen to ensure that the energies and skills young people bring can make a direct impact on poorer communities. When your work placement is finished, ICS will help you to use your experience to make a positive difference at home.

"Upon my return from Uganda, it was obvious that I now had to use my voice. If young people around the world facing far more injustice than me are using theirs, then what’s my excuse?"

In Ghana, over 300,000 people live with severe visual impairment. Due to a lack of understanding about disability, they are often undervalued by society and excluded from their community. Working with Team GB Paralympian Georgie Bullen, ICS volunteers on REACT are using goalball – a game designed for blind and visually impaired participants – to tackle disability stigma in northern Ghana.

Poverty, prejudice and limited resources mean deaf people in Nandi are often marginalised and miss out on the support they need. Deafway ICS volunteers worked with a number of different community organisations to teach Kenyan Sign Language and increase deaf awareness, and to challenge stigmatisation of deaf people. 📸ICS/ Jeffrey DeKock
