We’re very proud and pleased to be the winners of Private Banker International’s ‘Outstanding Private Bank for Philanthropy’ 2019 award.

The bank’s philanthropic principles date from our earliest years when ‘Good Henry’ Hoare (1677 – 1725) was a founder of Westminster Hospital. Now we’re carrying that charitable tradition into the 21st century with far-reaching social impact projects and some truly innovative ways to encourage giving.

Huge congratulations to everyone who contributed to these award-winning initiatives. Virtue is its own reward, but prizes are nice too!

Champagne and conversation flowed at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge last week, as the bank celebrated the launch of C. Hoare & Co.’s first regional office.

The Cambridge opening is a significant event in the history of the bank; it’s our third opening in nearly 350 years, and our first outside London. With its links to ancient tradition and cutting-edge technology, Cambridge is the perfect site for our new venture, and the Fitzwilliam Museum was the perfect venue for our launch party: the museum was funded, and largely filled, by the bequest of Richard FitzWilliam, 7th Viscount FitzWilliam, whose executor held an account with Hoares Bank from 1816-1894.

Our night at the museum was a wonderful welcome to Cambridge, and we’re looking forward to bringing our own traditions and new ideas to this vibrant community.

On 4th December over 70 guests gathered to hear a talk by distinguished biographer Claire Tomalin on novelist and Hoare’s Bank customer Jane Austen. Claire’s love for and deep knowledge of her subject was evident throughout the evening. A short history of the Jane Austen Society was followed by a summary of Austen’s life and work, after which Claire went on to explore one of her favourite heroines, Elizabeth Bennet. Claire’s witty and informed talk, incorporating some of her favourite passages from Pride & Prejudice, was much enjoyed by all and prompted a lively Q&A session.
