It's almost unknown, and its origin is in fact unknown. Very unique. Fascinating.
Absolutely incredible site that is just as impressive as any ancient city. You will be the only tourist here. Make sure to bring swimming trunks or a kayak because there are few bridges to connect the islands.
The best way to see Nan Madol is by kayak. Paddling through the mangroves and man made channels is really fun, as is checking out all of the gorgeous stonework from a time almost forgotten.
Ancient! Majestic! Mysterious!
A very interesting place to visit. Pretty easy access but you need substantial foot wear and expect to get your feet wet. Not much information at the site so google it beforehand.
We arrived by boat, didn't know there was a walking path to get there, that would have been very neat to check out.
It is extremely hot and humid. You will get wet. Good walking/hiking shoes are a must, or at least a good pair of Teva sandals. Bring plenty of water to drink, a hat and sunscreen.
I was at Nan Madol some years ago, but the feeling of that place has never left me. Equally as impressive as the temples and pyramids in Mexico, but more stunning knowing that the islands that the buildings sit upon are man made. One of the last true mysteries in the world are how those basalt logs were transported and placed by a civilization that didn't have the wheel!
If you happen to be on Pohnpei and have the time, Nan Madol is absolutely worth a visit.
The ruins of Nan Madol "spaces in between" is located in the island of Temwen, Madolenihmw Municipality. It is often times called "the Venice of the Pacific". It is about an hour and a half drive from Kolonia town. Tourist fees varies from $5 when you ride the boat from the chief's place and $7 if you will use the trail. ($1 fee near the Nan Madol sign, $3 on the house near the parking area and $3 on the bridge before you reach the ruins). Bring sandals and wear shorts because you will definitely get wet when you on your way to the ruins.

It was magnificent but kinda scary
The alien God's where talented
The place is really historic and mystique.
The ancient ruins in Pohnpei put me in awe and questions.
How did the Pohnpeian ancestors built such a things?
Enormous and magical!
Very powerful ruins, with a foreboding feel. There is no interpretation at the site, so read up before you go. A couple of islands are readily accessible with just a little wading, but I would love to come back with a boat. Even better, I hope the land ownership issues are worked out and this site can become a World Heritage site. It would be amazing to have more of the sites cleared of vegetation and some interpretive signs. I suppose the price would go up, but the access fee right now is only $4. $1 for the road and $3 to the landowners. However, the road guy told us he would take both payments so we gave him $4 each and still had to give the owners $3 each. Still worth it. But don't give him both payments.
Worth the visit, Hired car instead of taking the boat, low tide made it easy to access. Beautiful ruins. Highly recommended.
