On-par with other Micronesian airports, the Chuuk Airport was built on a former Japanese WWII airstrip. The departure lounge is small but has air conditioning. The $20 departure tax really irks me- they should work it into the ticket price.

There is a departure fee ,but other than that it is a very small airport built on an old Japanese airstrip.

I'm chuukese decent but i was raised in the US, i only have vivid memories of this airport.The restroom need some lift.But as heard is much better now,Crossing my finger this time i'm expecting more progress.

I've seen it at it's best and at it's worse (I was there during Typhoon Maysak) but I love this airport. Tiny, as many are in the corners of the world, built on the remains of an old WW2 Japanese airstrip, this airport serves as the one landing place for private traffic and a few commercial airlines that fly here. The terminal is tiny, customs is two booths, and the baggage area is a hole in the wall with a rubber curtain over it, but this place is great, you get in and out quick and the people are helpful.

beware of the chuuk airport scammer - picture provided. i'm not sure whether he's an employee, or just someone who knows his way into the sterile area - but he's always in the departure lobby when there's a flight, trying to scam people. he'll tell you that shirts are "for today, $25" and take your money, when in reality they're much less than that. he's a parasite who shouldn't be allowed into the airport.
