Tekezé Dam

  This dam and underground power station is situated in a very remote part of Ethiopia. It is a peaking power plant which can be turned on and off very quickly, therefore the controllers of the national grid can simply instruct the Tekeze power station manager to start up his turbines to meet national demand. His response obviously depends on the availability of water in the reservoir.
  
  As a tourist it is difficult to access the dam wall but it is possible to travel around and across the reservoir. During construction our boatman had to be particular careful and watch out for floating logs and crocodiles. All visitors are advised to drink plenty of water, temperatures can rise very rapidly in the reservoir area.
