Description

‘Reggae Boat Ride’ w host/presenter I-Timothy is a three hour excursion into the history, roots & culture of reggae music. We explore musically the growth and development of the unique and distinctive Caribbean art form of reggae music, founded and invented by the former slave African diaspora who were ‘carried beyond’ their original continent and often prohibited from their original forms of worship & praise. This denial of expression led to many unique hybrids of musical response, such as blues, jazz, and calypso. The island of Jamaica is noted as birthplace of reggae music in the 1970’s, after going through various trends such as ska, rock-steady, and mento, leading up to the groundbreaking song by Toots & the Maytals, ‘Do the Reggay’(sic), which many claim was the first song to use the word reggae. ‘The Reggae Boat Ride’ w/ I-Timothy will focus on the particular brand of reggae called ‘Roots’, which is pro-African, and often infusing the Rastafarian messages of peace, love & brotherhood, classic reggae from the pioneers of the genre, and new-wave conscious artists who bring modern stylings to the classic formula. We also aim to inform and educate the audience with details about the artists, songs, historical references that give insight into the motivation for certain songs and why they were written, as well as the way the artists themselves live or lived. 1.)Hour one- Features classic reggae and Rastafari anthems to set the conscious roots-reggae vibration,i.e. Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, etc… 2.)Hour two- Our ‘AFRO-INSIDE’ feature explores a particular artist or theme relating to either history of the music, African unity &/or development, or special in-studio guests that encompass all or part of the previously stated themes. 3.)Hour three-Audience requested songs, along with new selections and up-coming artists who fit the description of ‘roots-reggae’…
