Was here 5 years ago and had a great night. Unfortunately, the water in the lake has risen over that time and the original dining area is under water. Luckily, they were already building the expansion area around the lake and it is just as beautiful as the original area. They have also started work on expanded facilities to offer more to the guest.

The Kurifto Resort & Spa / Lodge (not sure which one is which) is great for a relaxing weekend away from Addis. The rooms are inspiring with running (hot) water and lovely details like rose flowers on the beds, though minor repairs and maintenance should be made if the resort wants to be five stars and not merely "charming". The grounds are well-maintained and lovely greenery dominate the areas between the bungalows. Also an added plus some spa treatments are included in the price, especially the massages on the upper deck with views to treetops are really a treat.
So in quick summary we would love to give this five start resort a five stars review, but a few smaller and one major drawback prevents this.
On the smaller side is the very slow serving in the restaurant but this appear to be the rule rather than the exception in Ethiopia, and to its credit the staff are really friendly and polite. Some it evens it out (somewhat). Another negative is the really small pool that also has unclear water, suggesting impurities from the many (happy) kids that uses it. Without a proper pool - also for adults - a "resort"can't get an excellent score in my book. Also, the nearby church is really noisy, so don't expect a totally quiet getaway. However, this can't be blamed on the resort as such but is simply its geography.
However, the biggest complaint is the fact that we were ordered to change room on our second day as the hotel had another booking. We were not told that we had to change room neither when booking nor when checking in. Really you don't want to spend time and emery on such logistical tasks when staying at a resort for relaxation. To make matters, in the beginning the staff appeared rude, pointing out that we still had our luggage in the room when we went for a spa treatment. And the reception then offered us a downgraded room compared to the room we had stayed in the first night. Very amateurish and obviously completely unacceptable.
To the credit of the hotel management this decision was rectified by instead offering us the executive suite. This gesture prompts us not to give a below average review. And we have signed up for a Kiriftu membership and will come back to this and other resorts. Hopefully to be positively surprised.
So the message to the franchise management is to keep up the aspiration to be a proper five star resort, truly appreciating that the quite expensive "product" is the tranquility from the huzzle and hassle from Ethiopia at large. And also to fix the minor issues goes without saying.response / report this review -
