  Ethiopia is the only place in castles and the Fasil Ghebbi castles was built by Emperor Fasilides in the 17th century. Known as the Camelot of Africa the castles are an architectural gem in Gondar, northern Ethiopia. A good time to visit is mid-January for the Timket Festival where Gondar is the epicentre for national celebrations.

  The castles of Gondar are amazing mostly for their location in remote Ethiopia. Early European visitors were amazed by these 17th and 18th century castles built without Europeans! To be fair, they followed a period of Portuguese influence, and after the Portuguese were thrown out Indian architects were brought in from His to replicate the Portuguese style. Several generations of Ethiopian kings, starting with Fasil, built castles before Gondar went into eclipse.

  WOW, This is one must visit/ see destination in Gondar. Having a good guide is a must (you can hire a guide just inside the entrance - just make sure they speak your language), otherwise one looses out on all the historical information that is just as important as the sight itself.
