Nice
The Eva Hotel in Debre Birhan, Ethiopia was surely my worst experience ever. In fact, it wasn't even an experience as they refused to honour a 10 day booking with advance payment done. My name was on their register but the staff simply lied about any online booking coming their way. To add to my woes, the website was assured room and refund for the first day and I was asked to go back there. Again, the staff refused to give me my room!
I later found out that they were trying to profit more from a cultural event on the day and also to get more money from employees of a new beer factory nearby. They disregarded the fact that the NGO I was working with regularly booked with them.In a country with such hospitable and kind people, that a hotel owned by a famous running champion practices such profiteering is shocking! Hope she realises that such dishonest practices to favour nearby beer factory employees will only tarnish her image in the rest of the world. Ethiopia is the No1 tourist destination for 2015 but not the Eva Hotel.
This hotel was introduced to us as the best hotel in Debre Birhan, and being brand new - only open a couple of months - we had high hopes. The hotel has very comfortable beds, and probably the most impressive chandeliers in Ethiopia. The hotel has lifts - but they aren't working, and wifi - but I couldn't actually download any data. The room had bedside lights but one had no bulb and the other had a bulb but it didn't work.
The spacious restaurant was more then fully staffed, most of whom stand around apparently not quite sure what they are being paid to do. We ordered a round of drinks - the Sprite came inside 5 minutes but after a 30 minute wait I had to almost make moves to find the kitchen and get my own beer from the fridge before anyone showed any degree of urgency. The dinner menu contained a full range of appealing dishes. After several requests were met with "we don't have that", and the whole ordering process turning into a Monty Python 'cheese shop'-style sketch I asked what they did have and it transpired fish or two choices of pizza. No beef or chicken, two days running, despite there being no shortage of butchers in Debre Birhan - though they did offer lamb on the second evening,
If you like chandeliers, this is the place to stay.
Please visit and enjoy EVA hotel in Debre Birhan . The hotel was starting services in the new building as of October 2014 and it become one of the famous hotel in the country.
