We went off season so the area itself was quiet, which is what we wanted. We booked direct and got the best room in the hotel which is the corner room with a sea front view.
Room itself was nice, comfortable bed, good size balcony and amazing views. There was also a coffee machine which was a nice touch.
Do be careful as the standard rooms will either look into the rooms of the hotel beside - or will look out onto other buildings.
We went for half board and had two days of buffet dinners. Buffet had a good selection.
The other days there was a menu for dinner. While the selection was quite good the service was slow and I found that most nights the food was just warm, and the sides (veg) were usually cold.
When there are so few guests in the hotel I would expect everything to be perfect but alas not. Perhaps it is because the chef was not used to preparing individual meals but more accustomed to buffet preparation.
For the price we paid I was happy and going off season has the advantage of it not being jam packed.
Peñiscola is a tourist spot and during winter has a population of 7,000 which explodes to 100k in summer! Schedule your visit wisely :)response / report this review -

One of the best hotels of Peñíscola. In my opinion, the best together hostería del mar. Portocristo has a great location, near the centre of the village. It has spa, gym, swimming pool and a terrace where you have a drink or cocktail.

The staff were very nice, the location is excellent. The front desk people offered to hold our bags after checkout so we could spend more time in the spa, which was above and beyond my expectations.
