Last week we were delighted to host Nigel Marsh, an Australian photo-journalist who recently publish the amazing book 'Diving with Sharks'. Searching for angel sharks in the quiet season can be a bit unrewarding, but on an amazing night dive in Playa del Cabrón we found and photographed a baby angel shark as well as white-spotted octopus, tamboril espinoso (spiny pufferfish), balearic congers and lots of other nocturnal species. Here is a small selection of the species we found during his visit. #divingwithsharks, #grancanaria, #padi, #divinggrancanaria, #Arinaga, #davyjones, #angelshark

Wow! PADI EMEA (Europe Middle east & Africa) have awarded us their 'Outstanding Achievement Award' for 2018 !

'Davy Jones Diving have made an immense contribution to the training of divers in the Canary Islands since moving to their new spacious dive centre in Arinaga in 2014' said Sascha Engeler, Regional Manager for PADI EMEA. Feedback from customers tells us that their students are trained to high levels of safety and confidence and really enjoy their courses with Davy Jones Diving. It is a very professional Five Star rated Dive Centre, and has a mature, experienced team of instructors. They cover a range of languages and have several who have gained PADI Elite Instructor status.'

Brian, Owner and Chief Instructor of Davy Jones Diving said 'I am delighted that the hard work of my instructors has been recognised with this award. We have one of the most amazing dive sites in the Canary Islands (the el Cabrón Marine Reserve) right next to us, and this has different dive areas which are perfect for different courses. Our combination of a strong team of instructors, great dive locations and great space and facilities at our dive centre in Arinaga have helped us to achieve this prestigious award'

Looks like we need a bigger trophy cabinet

Just a short clip of the first Honeycomb Filefish (Cantherhines pardalis) to be found in the Canary Islands. This has probably travelled from the Gulf of Guinea with one of the many oil platforms that come to Gran canaria for Repair.

Two bits of great news today.. First of all the strange fish I saw and photographed in El Cabrón about 10 days ago. According to a friend at the University it was confirmed as a Honeycomb Filefish (Cantherhines pardalis), probably from the guinea coast of West Africa, and whats more it is the FIRST RECORD OF SIGHTING in the Canary Islands! We also received confirmation that our application for registration in the new register of Turismo Activo has been fully approved at the first review! #divinggrancanaria, #davyjonesdiving, #activacanarias, #buceograncanaria

It may have been windy above the water but in El Cabrón the visibility is great! And we are finding all sorts of specials to show all our guests this summer.. A seahorse in shallow waters .. an unknown fish on the tabletop, a group of maria francesas (normally only in deeper water) and a pair of Rainbow wrasse in the same area as last year. El Cabrón remains the best place in Gran Canaria to see Spiny Pufferfish, but it looks like one of them, that we call Alpha, has been in a fight! (or accident with a boat ?) .. And for a change, a picture of me, not by me, taken by a student on a Digital UNderwater Photography course. #divinggrancanaria, #padi, #buceograncanaria, #grancanaria #seahorse

Today Eduardo and I went to see the new Hyperbaric Chamber which has just opened in Las Palmas. This brand new facility has a modern chamber with two independent rooms, one for 12 patients and one for two or three patients, so that even if general hyperbaric medicine is being carried out in the main chamber, emergencies can be treated quickly in the small chamber. The new centre can also provide medical certificates and advice in the case of suspected hyperbaric incidents. We have now aligned our contract for hyperbaric support to this new facility, but to be honest we really just want to carry on diving to the standards we have used for the last 15 years, under which we have never had to refer a diver to the medical services for hyperbaric treatment. If you are coming back please remeber three key standards .. follow the dive plans, don't fly within 18-24 hours after diving, and please DO NOT GO IN THE MOUNTAINS straight after diving. thanks to the team at chamber for looking after us today. #hyperbaricchamber, #grancanaria, #PADI, #divinggrancanaria, #buceo, #tauchen https://www.facebook.com/…/Hiperbaricas-Canarias-108111326…/

Our friends at ELASMOCAN continue to carry out leading-edge research into angel sharks. They have just announced that they have received funding from the Ministry for Ecologic Transition through the Biodiversity Foundation and Loro Parque Fundación for the first marine acoustic telemetry network in the Canary Islands.

The researchers from ElasmoCan consider the Special Conservgation area (SAC) “Costa Sardina del Norte” (Gáldar, Gran Canaria) as one of the critical areas for several coastal shark and ray species, especially for angelsharks. They have been able to confirm that these sharks develop all the activities from their life cycle in the bay of Sardina

The project intends a continuous tracing of the species over time within the SAC, to determine its movement patterns, to identify residence patterns, describe the habitat use and to raise public awareness about the presence and importance of the species in the SAC.

You can on their webpage at https://elasmocan.org/monitoring-telemetry-biodiversity-fo…/

    What a fantastic outfit!

All the staff were welcoming and helpful from the outset. Booked the advanced open water course having completed open water in UK.

Day one was spent getting back into things, a couple of fun dives (no doubt testing that we weren't clowns!). Thanks Hector and Edwardo.

Day two deep and nav adventure dives, both fantastic locations. Plenty to see and explore.

Day three, fun dive in morning then search and recovery adventure dive in afternoon. Swell had kicked up so getting in and out was like Coasteering!

Day four, extra couple of fun dives. Went down a hole, in the big cave and saw loads of awesome fish etc.

Day five boat and wreck day down with Jerry and the gang in Mogan.

Thanks to our instructor Brett, and of course Brian and Jessica for sorting us out re planning and logistics.

We stayed in nautilus appartments. Comfortable and convenient to dive centre as well as beach, shops and eateries.

Explored the local area in the early mornings and after the days diving (which finished before 3, leaving plenty of time for sunshine and exploring).

Thanks again for a fab week, we'll recommend to the world and look you up if we're in Gran Canaria again. Give us a shout if you're ever visiting West Wales, we'll throw you off some cliffs Coasteering :D

My dive was the 16th November at the Punta de la Monja in the reserve. The dive centre was good and clean. The staff were brilliant especially Brett who was my dive buddy and me being a novice diver he took good care of me. I did the afternoon dive but next time will do the 2 dives in one day as you get picked up and dropped off in their minibus. Prices are very reasonable as well. I will definitely be going back to dive again at the El Cabron with Brian and the rest of guys.

I've been looking for the dive club as my parents were coming to visit ( my dad is a fan of diving) and when I found this place. I knew that it's going to be the best decision I ever made!

Instructors are super helpful and friendly! Places were all the time different, so if you planning going there for few days you will definitely get different surrounding! We saw a shark, it's very rare and hard to find but thanks to the instructor knowledge we saw it in the wild. also sting rays and load of other fishes!

In between the dives we were transfered back to the La Casa de Limon, for some tea and snack and to reload the tanks. in many other clubs you just sit on the beach and have no opportunity to go anywhere far.

Also if you are interested in deepening your knowledge, they also offer classes and certification studies, so that is very handy too!

In few words that was great experience and I am glad that I have choose this club!!!

    Thank you very much!

Dave Eldridge Dived 20th and 21st October.

First time I've dived in Gran Canaria. Brian and the crowd were brilliant and I had a fantastic couple of days. I didn't realise just how much life there was here. For me the highlight was seeing 3 Ray's hiding in caves and another massive fish swim past that must have been about 2 metres long! Yes it really was that big!

I will definately dive with Brian and his team again.

My girlfriend and I booked snorkeling for the day for €45 each and we received a quick response when we emailed and immediately booked it. My expectations were very high from the information we received and we were both really excited. We were picked up punctually from our hotel and brought to the dive centre. We filled in the forms and were signposted to where all the facilities were, such as toilet, tea etc which was a nice touch. But, from then, I felt the attention was all focused on the scuba diving customers, and my girlfriend and I were forgotten about. We were given all of our gear after a lengthy wait, but nothing was really explained to us. We went to the first snorkeling site which was really nice. The only thing that ruined our experience was the customer service. My girlfriend was quite nervous about snorkeling and there was no reassurance or encouragement. Fortunately, I've been scuba diving before in Gran Canaria, and was familiar with what was going on but for my girlfriend it was all very new and nothing was explained to her which made her nervous. There was barely any instructions and lacked information; my girlfriend had trouble with water getting in her mask so I was the one who showed her how to get water out of it whilst underwater. Basic information was missed. The diving company I visited last year in Gran Canaria was really customer focused based and friendly which was not what I experienced with Davy Jones. I didn't even know the name of the instructor who took us! My girlfriend didn't want to snorkel in the second site because it looked dangerous and she didn't want to climb down rocks so we were taken to another site. After, we really tried to make the most of it and leave it on a high note, but as we were being driven back to our hotel, the car broke down on the motorway. This was the tipping point. It wasn't anyone's fault that the car broke down, even though I think the car has definitely seen better days, but we never received and apology or reassurance. We were stuck on the side of a busy motorway for 30 minutes, which was extremely dangerous, until the guys Dad had to come and pick us up and drive us back to the hotel. We both felt if the customer service was there, our experience would have been a lot better. I knew from previous experiences in scuba diving, in Gran Canaria specifically, we should never have been treated like that, whether we were snorkeling or scuba diving.

It would be super, if the center arranged, with the local shop, that they could deliver sandwich.. It is so cheep, and would mean so much. :-)

    Thanks fore the adventure. :-)

Wonderful diving club with excellent friendly staff. We booked an open water diver course without any previous diving experience. Our instructor Raymond Hermans was very knowledgeable and inspired us for adventures. Although the course can feel quite hard, Raymond, Jessica and Brett were always there to help us and calm us. The club also has a nice garden to chill and relax. While it was an intensive course we never felt rushed and the whole experience was top notch. It was an honour to be a student of master Ray!

I had a great time with Davy Jones and team - thoroughly Professional operation!

My trip was organised by Jessica and made me feel welcome at the center before I had even set foot on the island. It is located in a perfect place as my dives were only a 5 minute drive from the shop, meaning the all important surface interval will be warm and pleasant - even in Winter!

Raymond was my guide most of the time and his 10 foot 10 presence will be reassuring to any new divers, along with his charming personality! The water is 19 degrees and just fine with a 7mm wetsuit too.

I also dived with Brian, the owner, and he has a talent for explaining complex things in a easy to understand manner. Sebastian was another guide and his enthusiasm for safety and the sea was great to see! Eduardo has the coolest surface interval dive jacket that has ever existed! Lastly, Hector has a passion for teaching Scuba Diving and in my opinion, is a superb option for new students of the ocean!

Things seen on my 5 day trip were Angel Sharks, Eagle Rays, Schools of Roncadores, Garden eels, Moray eels, Octopus, Cuttlefish and Barracuda!

All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Davy Jones to any diver, new or experienced! You are in highly experienced hands and they are a credit to the industry.

Had three days diving with the team at Davy Jones; Raymond, Brett, Eduardo, Hector and Jessica are all amazingly professional and helpful. Not only did they help me refresh my skills but took my two children through their Open Water PADI certification. I would have no hesitation diving with this team again and again. The dive centre is located near to the main dive site at El Cabron (Marine Reserve) which means that unlike other dive operators you can nip back after the first dive to their office at Casa Limon and change the tanks, grab a coffee and relax before the second dive.. Put it on your list of things to do if in Gran Canaria whatever your diving proficiency!

Thank you Raymond and Brian for all your help over the last 4 days. You and your team at Davy Jones are awesome and i would highly recommend you to everyone i know no matter what their ability was.

The team are all very knowledgable and obviously love what they do. I can honestly see why they have the great reputation that they do! It was a pleasure to study my PADI Advanced here and i will be sure to be returning to see Brian and the team again.

The dive sites were awesome and if one of the team felt that they could not get into the water at a particular entry point the whole team went to a new one with no issues. From the many returning divers to those who had just started (and who were really unsure of swimming) everyone was treated with the same warm welcome.

If anyone wants to continue their diving or just have a one on one session to learn diving from scratch this is the place to go. No need to look anywhere else!

The fact that they come to pick you up from you house/hotel was a bonus to the whole experiance

The 5 star rating both as PADI school and that which is on Trip Advisor is well deserved. If there were a 7 star you would own it 100%!!!!

Thank you all for making my holiday one i will never forget and i will look forward to returning soon!

I've taken my PADI OPEN WATER with Davy Jones Diving team and it's been a fantastic experience, unforgettable!! They are all very kind, helpful and professional, and specially Jessica, my instructor; she is a very professional instructor who took care of me at all times and made herself sure that I was ok. She gave me very clear instructions, and did not doubt to repeat any explanation or exercices under water until I managed to perform them correctly. Indeed, Jessica is a very professional, experienced and patient instructor who showed me the wonders of the underwater world; always making sure that I enjoyed and I didn't miss any underwater wild life. On top of that, she is a super nice and friendly girl. So, if you are planning a diving course, without the shadow of a doubt I strongly recommend Jessica as a your instructor; she will make your experience unique and unforgettable! I just want to thank the whole team, and specially Jessica, my fantastic instructor!!
