    .

This cathedral is called officially the Catedral de Santa María y San Julián, and was built by an English Queen . . .

Well, not actually by her, I doubt that she had any training as a stonemason. :-)

But Alienor or Eleanor or Elinor (medieval spelling varied) Plantagenet, daughter of Henry II of England and wife of King Alfonso VIII of Castille, was the instigator in the creation of this cathedral in the late 12th century, after the town had been re-conquered from the Moors and the Mosque destroyed.

The curious thing is the facade, the top half of which is false, put to impress with its height when actually behind it is a smaller building than you think at first sight. Bit of a cheek really!

It's in the Plaza Mayor and makes a nice photo together with the brightly painted houses. And you can sit at one of the little bars with a coffee, a beer or a nice glass of Rioja and have a little chuckle at that false facade.

Amazing! The ticket is 3,80 but it includes an audio guide so it's no bad! Really the most beautiful city from Spain!

Like so many churches in Spain, this one will take your breath away once you walk through those front doors! Built in the Gothic style, completed in 1257. Beautifully maintained and well cared for this one is a jewel!
