incredible the effect it had on my wife and me: struck by awe we were silent, just sat there. So good to see the pilgrims who had taken off their shoes.
So beautiful, inside and outside, not overdone but stylish, authentic. And no signs for the tourists saying what to do and what not to. Unforgettable.response / report this review -

Very impressive outside, but a bit empty inside. The altar is marvelous and the organ is beautiful, but except those parts, the rest is quite modest. In other cathedrals you may see a lot of paintings and sculptures, for example. The good thing is that the visit is free.

Just sublime. A world-class masterpiece of art, and a unique place of worship for Christendom. Unique and wonderful. The surroundings are equally stunning, what an amazing place. I would stay here for weeks!

This is a great location - you can't find a better one for the price and the kind of stay you'll have. There is an upstairs common place with a cute and highly functional kitchen and a washer dryer for your clothes. You can sit on the patio or in the common room or enjoy a meal you made yourself. Below you is a walkway with no car access so it's very quiet. We got the room with a private bathroom. It's very clean and very well maintained. The decor is antique style with unique touches. The water is nice and hot and the A/C is perfectly cool. We had a window with a lot of light and no noise from anywhere. When you walk left you can get to a cute cage with some pastries, wine, and coffee - they also have great dinner. To the right are all the shops and my favorite cafe which is Cafe Brasileira. It's a great place to walk around at night and the kids can play in the plaza nearby.

An absolute must visit, unfortunately tickets must now be bought in advance and no back packs allowed. Try sitting in the Parador outdoor cafe opposite and enjoy the magnificence of the building as the sun sets and glows on the wonderful architecture. From this view point you can relax and enjoy. Food in the cafe good also and good value.. if you're lucky somebody will be singing or playing a beautiful piece of music in the square somewhere.

It is a massive and beautiful Cathedral with lots of gold plated surfaces and a long history dating back to late 8th and early 9th century when king Alfonso II ordered the construction of a chapel to hold the remains of apostle Saint James who was beheaded in Jerusalem in 44 AD.
Subsequently the first church was conducted in 829 AD. In 997 the early church was reduced to ashes by war. Construction of the present church started in 1075 with the last stone being laid in 1122.
The cathedral was subsequently expanded and embellished with additions in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
The exterior of cathedral has been under renovations for several years. The interior is now under renovations as well but the church is open during the renovation and they conduct two masses a day one at noon and one at 7:30 pm. Upresponse / report this review -

Under renovation. Very old but lavish. Cathedral is made if cement and stones but the decoration of main altar is good leaf.

Superb.
My wife completed the 800km Camino in Sept 2017 and I & our 5 yr old travelled from Australia to Santiago de Compostela to meet/congratulate her.
We were VERY fortunate to witness the botafumerio swinging through the soaring Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela - the highlight of every pilgrims trip on the Camino de Santiago.response / report this review -

I've seen better cathedrals in spain. Beautiful in the outside, it needs maintenance inside, actually it seems it's going under maintenance, in terms of architecture the place is nice. Considering the Catholic Church was once rich and powerful and they were also murderers and pedophiles, none of that dark past can be seen, feel free to visit the place with your family and children, the priest don't seem to be on of those dirty degenerate we see often on this type of buildings

Very impressive, huge cathedral with an interesting history. A mixture of different architectures from different epochs. Wow visiting with a guided tour, but also requires some reading homework to be prepared (otherwise you won't get much and will be bored)

Go at the end of mass to watch the swinging incense burner. It's an incredible Romanesque cathedral that's open to the public. Go to the tomb of St. James, which doesn't have nearly as long a lineup as his statue.

Big and beautiful cathedral of Santiago where you can check the interior for free and also take a look downstairs, where Santiago is. A lot of events in foreign languages. Your backpack have to stay due to security reasons outside.
