  I got use of the public library there Beautiful building representative of one of one of the longest educational institutions there University of Salamanca. The oldest University in theoretical studies in the world.
  The building itself was commission by a Salamanca university professor a year after the foundation of Spain as a country.

  No great shakes - the outside is the best bet
  
  You can visit the inside of the Casa de las Conchas - the Shell House, but actually some of the other places such as the Colegio Fonseca are nicer inside.
  
  But it's free: Monday-Friday, 9 to 9, Saturday 9 to 2 and 5 to 7, Sunday and Bank Holidays 10 to 2 and 4 to 7. (You'd better check - it may change).
  
  Why couldn't they have some easier to remember opening times?
  
  The shells outside are getting rather worn - is this the result of pollution, with the exhaust fumes damaging the stone?
  
  It's quite a spectacular sight from the outside, on the corner of the Rua Mayor where there are loads of little bars and restaurants where you can eat for a modest fee.
  
  The shells themselves were added either because they were on the family heraldic shield of his wife, or because he was a Caballero of the Order of Saint James, whose emblem is the shell. Think of the Pilgrims walking with their cockleshells along the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela - the same saint. Quite possibly it was for both reasons.
  
  Anyway, there they are.
  
  Inside is nothing special, although a free entry is always worth taking up. The Tourist Office is here too, so you can stock up on leaflets and maps.

  You'll know this one by the hundreds of stone scallop shells decorating the exterior. Go inside to the interior courtyard and see the old well still there. Climb the stairs to the upper balcony and look across the way to the bell towers of the beautiful La Clerecía. That's your next stop!!?

  La Casa de las Conchas ("House of the Shells") is always worth a visit - to view the facade, if nothing else! They often have art exhibits inside, and the cloister is gorgeous.
  
  It's a unique and charming bit of architecture in this lovely college town of Salamanca.
