Incredible incredible food with picturesque backdrop. The absolute freshest seafood cooked with a distinctive aroma of smoke, which the staff unfortunately never mentioned upon serving dishes even though their website mentions that smoke is the basis of their flavours.
The food is absolutely divine. One of the most interesting things was the goat butter - recognisable goat flavour but without the off-putting odour, complementing the bread perfectly. The scarlet prawns are a standout - cooked gently just past crudo stage, so that they firm up perfectly without becoming mushy. Another highlight was the chocolate souffle, which continued to ooze even after halfway through eating, with a refined exquisite flavour and texture and a delicate custard.
Service unfortunately not up to scratch for #3 on San Pellegrino's World 50 Best - no staff to greet us downstairs on arrival, only pulled one chair out instead of both, food runner didn't always give descriptions of the food and water leaked out of bottle while pouring.response / report this review -

The food Is amazing, the way the barbecue Is used Is Simply magic however the service was not at the same level especially to justfy such a High price. We asked for some information regarding the beer they produce and we were told to try It (and we were also charged for such taste). After the dessert we were supposed to receive a last sweet(indicate in the tasting menù) that was never delivered even if I asked for It. The waitress only came to us for the payment and then disappeard so we left the Place without any greetings. In a Place like this I would expect an experience and not Just very well cooked food.

The rustic charm of 10 years ago has disappeared, replaced by professionalism and sophistication. I would rather go back in time, as that was what made Etxebarri special, but the food remains top notch.

Not a lot of people are going to accidentally wander into this restaurant due to the remote-ish location. You must have a reservation. Most people will know something about what they are getting into. Do not be intimidated by reviews stating how hard it is to get here. Take the train to Durango station and go to the taxi stand and take a 15 minute taxi there. Food is amazing. There is lots of it. If you like fancy yet non pretentious food, you have to go here.

Can't believe most of the food, if not all, is cooked on a grill. It's tucked away in the mountains of Basque Country - either rent a car to drive here or taxi - but be aware that your taxi ride will end up costing you almost as much as the meal if you ride from San Sebastián!
