Admired by Frank Loyd Wright and described by Maqrizi, this magnificent complex was commissioned by Sultan Hassan the grand son of Qalawun (who his famous complex in Moez Street) when he was 25 y
Construction lasted 3 y led by master builder Mohamed Baylik
Al Muhssini, who brought Craftsmen
from all over the Mamluk empire
• The cost was so colossal that it nearly
emptied the vast Mamluk Treasury.
Work continued NON-STOP for 3 years

It cost 30,000 dirham every
day ranked the most expensive in Mid history. More than just a monument, he intended to challenge the powers of Mamluk Emirs and bring more power to the common people. That's why the strategic location across from the Citadel in an area used by locals.
