An extremely well appointed lodge with a huge garden. Wildlife as well as children friendly. Run by a caring and friendly family.

Amazingly the very best part of a great trip to the Quito area and the Galapagos in October 2016 was our four night stay at the wonderful Zaysant Ecolodge. Part of the appeal was staying outside of crowded, noisy Quito in a lush, lovely garden setting (15 minutes from the airport, transport available arranged by Zaysant for $12 per trip) and part was the very reasonable price. What wasn’t expected was the way owners Gerardo and Zayra (pronounced "sigh-duh") immediately made us a part of their family! Their two happy, friendly children (Said and Antonella) were willing to practice their English with us by telling us about their day at school, their dogs, and various sporting activities. Meals (large breakfast included, other meals extra by arrangement) were served in the family’s extended kitchen area so that we were always remotely part of the family interactions. On our first day Gerardo offered to take us just down the road to get a view of distant Cotopaxi volcano. Then he walked with us for a few kilometers on the very nearby 20K hiking/biking trail that goes from Puembo to Cumbaya (Ruta Ecológica El Chaquiñan), followed by a stop for a delicious handmade ice cream, “helado de paila”, made in the traditional bronze paila dish.
Our small cottage was perfect, two rooms (I was traveling with my elderly father) and a bath, with a nice private porch at the front door. The decor in all rooms is comfortably rustic, with the rooms and bathroom being spotless. Gerardo is a real wood craftsman and incorporated his talents into artful use of local woods for all the rooms and cottages support beams, doors and some furniture. Beautiful! Zaysant is a labor of love that Gerardo designed and built himself, along with four other men. The extensive grounds of Zaysant are so well tended by Gerardo and Uriel (and his extremely nice son, Johan) and are perfect if you are traveling with kids or just love wandering in an open-air outdoor setting complete with many birds. There is a game room, small gym, fabulous aromatherapy sauna, hot tub, and a massage room, where we enjoyed a lovely gentle Swedish massage ($25/ hour). Hearty meals (very reasonable extra charge)were fixed for us each morning and night by Zayra and Sandra in the main lodge, while we used the WiFi to catch up on our email, photo sending and phone calls.
Out of the many places all over the world that I’ve stayed in the past 50 years, Zaysant Ecolodge is my favorite! I’d return to Ecuador just to see Gerardo's extended family and to enjoy the serenity of the Zaysant Ecolodge again!response / report this review -

What a wonderful place to start and end your holiday! We arrived at the start of a long trip tired and jet lagged and were immediately made to feel so welcome and invited to treat the lodge as our home. Warm hospitality, lovely clean individualistic rooms made in the rustic style very skilfully by the owner. A large beautiful garden with many birds. Homely meals in the dining room watching humming birds. We enjoyed the pool and table tennis too. Much to be recommended. We also had lifts from and to the airport at very unsociable hours. Great experience.

Lovely gated and walled property, caring proprietors, this was the most comfortable part of our two week stay in Ecuador.
Our room was part of converted former stables from the original estate, completely redone in brick, timber, tile, and stone and modernized. Geraldo, the owner, is a carpenter and he has utilized native trees from this property in this rustic remodel. We enjoyed the comfortable beds, the delicious food and quiet ambiance. The main residence houses the big kitchen, several dining areas, a lounge with big screen TV and two porches that have a hammock and very comfortable seating overlooking the lawn. There's ample space for kids to run around. The grounds are well manicured and the flower beds and trees are beautiful. The amenities include a sauna room, a jacuzzi room, a pool table, a greenhouse, a garden area, a kennel for the resident pooches, a large laundry area and a separate building for the exercise equipment, if you are so inclined. Zaysa prepares breakfast and can also prepare lunch and dinner if needed. They will cater to your schedule. The airport is fairly close. They can arrange transportation. This place is stunning!! You can tell the owners, Gerardo and Zayra, take pride in caring for the property and their guests. They treat you like family and you actually start to feel like it's your home. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner can be prepared for you whenever you ask. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and have a modern cabin feel. I'm not really a cabin person, but this changed the game for me. Plus, you never have to feel rushed to leave when it's time to. After spending 2 weeks in Ecuador, this is hands down the best place I've stayed. I only wish I would have found this place sooner and been able to stay longer. I want to go back to Ecuador just to stay here. I can go on and on about this amazing place!
