Viejamar is owned and run by Rodrigo, former surf champion, Spanish TV broadcaster, and now surf bum hostel owner. He is a real, entertaining, character and the lifeblood of this small hostel. The lodging is basic but comfortable and pleasant. There were two French and one Argentinian volunteer staying here at the time of my visit, they did most of the day to day work maintaining the hostel including cleaning the cabins and dorm rooms and makes everyone's bed every day.
This is a great place to spend several days or even 2-3 weeks. The surf in the backyard isn't for beginners but is fun for all to swim in. During July and August you can watch whales while sitting in a hammock on the wonderful second floor balcony.
The beach is 9.5/10 stunning. It's sunny every 1/3 days in the fall.
You can take surf lessons here with Rodrigo, or rent a board for $15/day.
The kitchen is communal and you cook all of your own meals, although they provide eggs and bread for breakfast you need to buy groceries for lunch and dinner. Rodrigo will drive into town with you to pick up a bunch of groceries or pick up small things for you during his daily trips into town.
This place is amazing.
